So what cool names have you come up with for your pets/plants/inanimateobjects/cars/etc?
79 responses total.
I used to have a hamster named Eric, thanks to a Monty Python skit. Imagine my surprise a couple of weeks later when Eric gave birth!
I don't name inanimate objects, particularly cars. My sisters and I have a running debate on this, but since I now own the car that was most heavily involved, it's not as much of an issue anymore.
My carpet is named Rug.
Hmm . . . well, the only inanimate objects I've named have been weapons. There's my rapier Sky. And in wishful thinking into the future, a name for a first born daughter: Johanna Fjotra Arnesen.
My cats are Murphy and Guinness. Future children? Hmmm . .well, when I was with Gary, we had settled on Norah for a girl and Owen for a boy. Not quite sure now.
My last few cars:
Wakanda - Lakota for "spirit power", because we have no word for "high
octane". Ford Mustang.
Elektra - Dodge Avenger.
Cerridwen - Ford F-150.
right now: Honda Civic: John Steed Toyota Echo: Emma Peel last cars: Honda Civic: Andi (short for Andrea!) Dodge Neon: Olivia Blue Yugo: Hugo We were cycling through Huey, Dewey, and Louie for our computers for a while, but we lost track.
I don't name cars unless they show enough personality that a name just seems natural. I do name computers. My scheme is generally to name them after birds. Currently I have condor, osprey, and seagull...at one time I had more, but I sold most of them before my last move.
O, I did forget pet names . . . Dogs; Anna, Murphy Cats; Sigurd, Snorri
I named my first computer "Myrddin Emrys" after the Merlin character in "The Crystal Cave" series. After that I named them after my Dungeons and Dragons characters from my college days, until I quit naming them at all.
The only inanimate objects I name regularly are computers, and them only because names are needed for networking. I'm working through the Hebrides. (The first work computer I could claim as my own had been named "skye", I thought for the Isle. Only later did I remember that it's previous owner's name was "S. Kye". I've stuck with the pattern, nonetheless.) Right now, I'm using islay (an NT box), coll (Solaris 2.6) and eigg (MacOS X). I've not turned on rhum (Win2K) but once or twice; someday I should set aside some time to bring it up. My PowerBook 3400 was tiree.
For our baby we have chosen the following names. If it's a boy, his name will be Samuel Rey Pratt If it's a girl, she will be Sarah Lynn Pratt.
no carrie?! ;P
Not yet. maybe with future children.
is anyone free for chatting with me. i am nitin from india
resp:13 sorry hon, it was decided a long time ago. Long before the pregnancy happened. "Sarah Lynn" just seemed and felt right, as if the kid picked it herself. Of course, it will be strange if this child turns out to be a boy, but, anyway, yeah, sure, the second girl can be Carrie Adena.
one of the kids of my friends is named Milo. i think that's just so cute.
cat one: spaghetti eddy aka ed cat two: jerry (said in a silly *french* accent) aka jerrycat dog: Chives Monkeybutt aka ulrich
The cat is Sasha Allen Fogg Perry (when she's in trouble, she's usually Sasha, Sashi or some other derivation). First car (1990 Cutlass Supreme) was Myka (short form of MY CAr with a K) Second Car (1999 Olds Alero) is Mojo, named thus by my older brother. Said brother now drives one of the new super-cool looking/WAY bright blue/way too much fun to drive Subaru named Rodan.
I'm writing a story where the main character owns a cat named "Captain Flo"
does he get neutered?
or does he git et?
My cats are Percy Bysshe Shelley (usually just Shelley, but sometimes I call him Peebs), Noel (she was found on Xmas), and Daniel (the song popped into my head while we were trying to coax him into the cat carrier, he was also a stray).
Back in my music geek days, I had a synth keyboard named Rosencrantz and a sampler named Guildenstern. Anyone who names audio electronics after Shakespearean characters needs help, is what I'm thinking. Guildenstern bit the dust a few years ago. I'd have sold Rosencrantz, but he's got a few sticky keys and isn't really worth much anymore. My computer's name is Oberon. It was Titania for a while, but it kept crashing. One time, when I was reinstalling everything again, I named the hard disk Oberon instead, and it worked better. Gender issues. The mandolin's name is Kay. It's not really that creative -- she's a Kentucky brand mandolin.
My car goes from Space Ghost to the Shaggin Wagon. (Volvo station wagon).
resp:21 Captain Flo is female, a calico actually, and, as for her family having her fixed, I'm not sure yet. I would say she has probably already been spayed. She's called Captain Flo because she acts like she's in charge of everybody. They also have a Samoyed dog which Flo gets along with pretty well.
My current computer is "ea" (the 2 other computers on "my" network are "ea2" and "ea3"). I think the servers on campus have more interesting names ... Rodan, Gamera, Forbin, Hydra, Lurch, and Icarus (Mothra has been retired)
Cats: Fido and Spot Only one car had a name: A Ford Falcon was the Gutless Wonder
A friend of mine has a mutt named Diogi (dee-OH-gee)...
I've often named my cars. I had one named "Slower than C" and called it "Slow" for short. It was also slower than highway speeds, and after not long was slowly towed to a junk yard. My nephew and niece named one car "Cookie". The minivan was named "Clara Belle". My wife woke up in the middle of the night and for some reason made a list of 100 names for cows, and the van we bought not long after that seemed bovine to us. My old pickup truck is "the Pogo Truck" and my 5 year old and I sing songs to and about it. I haven't named the Taurus I've been driving every day for the last few months. Maybe I'll ask my son if we can name it "Oxbow", for no particular reason than that it seems an okay name to me.
My family has always named its cars. The first one I remember was the Ford Falcon that was named "Henry". Then there was the AMC Matador named "Toro". Then the light-blue Plymouth named "Beyond" (the blue Horizon). My first car was a four-door Nissan Stanza so I named it "Quatrain". Then I got a Nissan 240SX in two-tone blue which was "the Blue Bomb"; after that it was a red Saab named "Erik". My wife had a grey Buick LeSabre that was named "Mouser". My Plymouth Sundance was named "Longbow" (I'm an archer and the real name of the Sundance Kid was Harry Longbaugh).
All my cars have had names: 1976 Malibu: Ian 197? Chrysler thing: Sylvie 1980 Skylark: Heathcliff 1989 Geo: Pan 198? Celebrity wagon: Gertrude 197? Ford thing: Aloysius 197? Jeep Cherokee: Bullwinkle 1983 Mustang: Critter 1979 Aspen wagon: Caspar 1980 AMC Eagle wagon: Hobbes 1983 Saab 900: Freya 1991 Cutlass wagon: Mortimer
I've only had one car with a name. When I was a teenager, my family had a 1979 baby blue Ford Fairmont station wagon which was the oldest car in the family and, thus, the only one I was allowed to drive. One time, I went to pick up a friend and she noticed the HUNDREDS of wire coat hangers that were in the way back. (My mom had cleaned the closets and put them in the car so she could recycle them). So my friend said, "Geez Lynne, what are you planning on doing with all those hangers? Open a mobile abortion clinic?" We called the car M.A.C. after that and the name stuck.
That's wonderfully tasteless. ;)
<remmers nostalgically recalls Meg Geddes' "Bloodmobile" from the 1980s...>
am I the only person who has not named my vehicle? Maybe I'm out of it. My friends in high school dubbed a Pontiac Sunbird (1980's, forgot what year) the "Prattmobile." The next car, an '87 Toyota Tercel, was named "Noname" by another friend. The next car, an '87 Chevy Nova/Corolla, I named 'Aaron' (ERN was part of the license plate). Current vehicle-- 1995 Dodge Caravan.. no name.
You're not the only who never names cars, computers, and other non-living objects. I don't either.
read resp:36 again. I named one vehicle. Of course, I never used any of the names consistently.
I never name them, personally.
