NUMBER OF ELEVATORS IN HOMES RISING: "The Santa Rosa Press Democrat" has reported the number of elevators installed in new homes is growing in northern California. One company reported a 100% increase in business during the last three years, due in part to equipment improvement and also to the changing needs of an aging population. OTIS DONATES ELEVATOR TO PLAINS: Otis Elevator Co. has donated funds to install an elevator in a historic building in Plains, Georgia. The site is the location of a store operated by the uncle of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who is assisting with the renovation of the building in conjunction with a local group. The former store, built in 1890, now houses an antique store, museum and bed and breakfast. Four women were entrapped in one elevator for an hour and others were briefly stuck in two other elevators. The elevator maintained lights and ventilation and the four women were in constant communication with rescue personnel. No injuries were reported. The cause of the electrical fire was not known at the time. GERMAN UNION STRIKES FOR HIGHER WAGES: The IG Metall union has organized strikes at several locations around Germany. About 4,500 of the 2.7 million members are involved in the initial job actions, the aim of which is to get members higher wages. Included among the companies being struck are Otis Elevator Co. and Bombardier Transportation. OTIS SOUTH AFRICA MOVES: The Johannesburg branch office of Otis South Africa is moving to the company's Wadeville Manufacturing premises by the end of May. Included is an escalator/elevator replacement and modernization program. The proposed budget is US$465.5 million. ESCALATOR INCIDENT: On Tuesday, May 7, while baseball fans in Anaheim, California were exiting Edison Field, an escalator is reported to have suddenly increased in speed injuring 15 of the passengers, though none seriously. The escalator has been shut down pending an investigation into what happened. MAN SURVIVES FALL DOWN ELEVATOR SHAFT: The "Mobile Register" reported that a man opened the doors to an old service elevator in an apartment building in Mobile, Alabama on Wednesday, May 8. The elevator was used only by employees and is operated by pushing a handle. He fell four stories and was wedged in the shaft. The Fire-Rescue Department had to remove part of a wall to reach him. It is not known why the man forced open the outside doors or why he was attempting to access the service elevator. A passenger elevator is available for residents. HIGH-RISE TRAINING: The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) is planning to complete the purchase of a 25-story building at 37 Wall Street to train firefighters on high-rise fires. The Bank of New York currently occupying the building will move back into its repaired headquarters at 101 Barclay Street, freeing up the tower. Work has already begun on the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) station. The vertical transportation would take zoo visitors from the parking area to a new entrance at the attraction. The San Diego City Council must still review and approve the plans, a process which could take more than one year. KONE TO AMEND ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION: KONE Corp. will hold an Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders to propose an amendment to its Articles of Association. The articles in question are Article 4, Par Value and Article 5, Classes of Shares. KONE proposes to split each share into three shares with a par value of EUR1 (US$.90) which is the current value. With approval, the number of shares will increase to 60,463,620. ADDITION PLANNED FOR CHICAGO TOWER: Lucien Lagrange and Associates have been chosen as architects to design a 16-story addition to a mixed-use building at 175 West Jackson Boulevard in Chicago. The existing 22-story tower houses office and retail space. The addition will add another 500,000 square feet to the building. PARTIAL SURVEY OF QUAKE DAMAGE: A survey of elevator contractors in Seattle found at least 504 electric and 66 hydraulic elevators sustained damage during the earthquake that hit the area on February 28, 2001. Dropping 11%, the seasonally adjusted annual rate was US$468.9 billion. Nonresidential building dropped 10% to US$150.6 billion with a decrease of 20% for hotels and office construction remaining unchanged. Regionally, the South Atlantic was up 12%, the Midwest up 6% and the Northeast up 4% while the West was down 9% and the South Central down 13%. GUANGZHOU EXHIBITION CENTER: ThyssenKrupp will install 25 passenger elevators in the Guangzhou International Exhibition Center, which is to be completed later this year. The elevator units are TE-B series, 1350kg, 1.6mps. WIDE MOVING WALKS DEMONSTRATED: Suzhou Jiangnan Elevators recently demonstrated its new 1400mm-wide moving walks. They have a maximum length of 150 meters and rated speeds of 0.5mps and 0.65mps. IN MEMORIAL: MAYNARD CHARLES HENKER: Maynard Charles Henker passed away February 28 at the age of 96. Henker is survived by his daughter, Susan Corriea, and stepson, George Bowman, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. The business will be managed out of KONE's existing operations in Memphis. ACLU INVESTIGATING WASHINGTON D.C. METRO SYSTEM: The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is investigating claims that the Washington D.C. Metro system has violated the civil rights of the disabled by having broken elevators and no other means to assist the disabled in traveling on the system, according to the "Washington Post." The investigation was opened after an incident in which a wheelchair passenger was unable to find a working elevator and was fined US$25 for violating public speech laws while expressing his frustration. Metro officials have called for subway managers to devise a better way to assist the disabled when elevators are not available. THE LATEST ON THE WTC FUTURE DESIGN: "Newsweek" updated the design status for the World Trade Center (WTC) site in its May 20 issue. Currently, both the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. and the New York New Jersey Port Authority have control over what will be designed in the footprints of the WTC. The two groups should announce the design team in early June and that team will have until July 1 to come up with six different design schemes. In the meantime, a citizen's group put together Imagine New York public workshops. What is clear is the ideas by the citizens and the ideas of the officials vary greatly. And the big question is does lower Manhattan even need the 10 million square feet of lost office space rebuilt? A preliminary design for 7 WTC indicates a glass high rise shaped like a parallelogram with a stainless-steel-mesh base. METRO ESCALATOR INCIDENT: Four Washington D.C. Metro escalator passengers were involved in an incident at Union Station on Thursday, May 23. The first passenger was on a walker and insisted on taking the escalator instead of the elevator as a system manager suggested. When she reached the top, she fell, causing the following three passengers to become entangled. The monolithic structure will be surrounded by Lake Murten and will contain a more than 100-year-old scroll which displays scenes from the battle of Murten. Schindler also won the modernization contract for the Stuttgart TV tower. The original equipment was provided by Haushahn which is now part of Schindler Germany. Controls, gearless machines, doors and safeties will be manufactured in Ebikon, Switzerland while the cabs will be made in Stuttgart. The project is scheduled for completion by April 2003. Schindler also supplied chip-card-access elevators for the 165-meter Koeln Turm, a 41-story building in the new Media Park in Cologne. Same Experts. ____________________________________________________________________________ ELEVATOR MACHINERY AND THE WTC SOUTH TOWER: According to "USA Today," the elevator machinery room on the 81st floor of the World Trade Center south tower helped saved the lives of at least 16 people on 9-11. The machine room contained 12 24-ton elevator hoists which enabled high-speed express units move from the lobby to the 78th floor. The Otis Elevator Co. 339HT machines were among the largest of its kind when installed over 30 years ago and caused the design of Stairway A away from the southeast corner where the jet's path ran. Some of the eight-feet tall, 13-by-eight-feet wide machines were found intact at Ground Zero, still bolted to the specially reinforced beams that held them. RETIREMENT PARTY FOR PATRICK WELSH: A retirement party was held for Patrick Welsh on April 27 at the TAIX restaurant in Los Angeles. Welsh, a 43-year elevator industry veteran officially retired May 4. He has served the industry in many capacities including being a past president of the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC). Reported by John Brannon. AMTECH WINS CONTRACT FOR PNC PARK: Amtech Elevator Services has won a maintenance contract with CB Richard Ellis Sports for PNC Park the new home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The contract includes the maintenance and repair of 19 elevators and eight escalators located in the 38,000-seat ballpark and 30,000-square-foot retail facility. HEIGHT LOWERED IN TRANSELEKTRO PROJECT: Transelektro Rt., a Hungarian real-estate developer, has redesigned its 72-meter building for the Duna Plaza shopping center which was part of the US$200 million Danube embankment project in District 13 of Budapest. Constructing small buildings would allow the space to be used immediately rather than leaving the site open for the lengthy time period that it would take to build the taller buildings that will inevitably replace the WTC towers. The idea was told to the Associated Press by Alexander Garvin of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. A final decision on the design of the site is scheduled to be made by December 1. STRIKES THREATENED IN GERMANY: Dow Jones Business News is reporting that the IG Bau labor union may strike if a wage settlement is not reached with the HDB construction industry federation. IG Bau is asking for a 4.5% wage increase, while the industry employers are offering a 3% raise from September and a 2.1% increase from April 2003. NEW ENGLAND CLUB HONORS OTIS: Otis Elevator Co. was recognized by the Publicity Club of New England at that organization's 33rd annual awards ceremony on June 5. MILWAUKEE CONSTRUCTION NEWS: A 25-story residential tower is being planned for downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The University Club Tower would have luxury condominiums overlooking Lake Michigan. The 30-story Kilbourne Tower is scheduled to begin construction in the fall on an adjacent site, while an 18-story tower is under construction several blocks to the north. The proposal includes raising the minimum structure size requirements, reducing the item assessments to 10 and allowing companies to forgo environmental-feasibility study submissions. The current laws went into effect in 1981 and have affected around 40 structures. NFPA 5000 BUILDING CODE(TM) ACCEPTED: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) voted to accept the NFPA 5000 Building Code during its World Safety Conference and Exposition Technical Committee Reports session held May 23 in Minneapolis. The code will need to be considered for issuance at the Standards Council meeting to be held June 16. Currently, the code can be accessed at website: www.nfpa.org. AFP CHINA DEVELOPMENTS: "The South China Morning Post" reports that Singapore's Asia Food and Properties (AFP) has added to its developments in China. In Shanghai, the AFP Bund Center will be fully operational in September and includes a 50-story office building and a five-star Westin Shanghai Hotel. Next to its Golden Center retail mall in Ningpo, AFP will add a 52-story residential project to be completed by 2005. SINGAPORE TO ADD SEVEN RESIDENTIAL TOWERS: Singapore recently released design plans for its public housing project in the Duxton Plain in Tanjong Pagar. The site will hold seven slender 48-story towers and contain living space for 1,800 families. The buildings will be connected at the 26th story and will include rooftop gardens, jogging tracks and sports/entertainment facilities. ARC Studio Architecture and Urbanism won the design contract. Same Experts. _______________________________________________________________________ SCOTLAND'S USHER HALL TO BE RENOVATED: Usher Hall is the home of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and is located in Edinburgh. The 55-year-old building's renovation will include wheelchair access and new elevators. Construction has not yet been scheduled. CAPTIVATE TO CHARGE INSTALLATION FEES: Captivate Network Inc., an elevator ad company, now charges installation fees. The company has also added a monthly programming fee per elevator screen. According to President Michael DiFranza, "The added revenue streams should enable the company to achieve operational cash flow by the fourth quarter." He added that Captivate has about 4,000 screens across North America reaching approximately 3.6 million business personnel each month. WASHINGTON, D.C. TUNNEL SYSTEM: The U.S. National Park Service has several tunnel plans for Washington, D.C. The tunnel bringing tourists to the new Capitol visitors' center is already approved and construction has begun. Other tunnel-access proposals include one under the Vietnam Memorial, the Washington Monument and one to enter the White House. The Lodge, located east of the Washington Monument, would include elevator access to and from the tunnel leading to the monument. Net profit for the period of January to March decreased 38% to EUR66 million (US$61 million). Pre-tax profit was down 40% to EUR96 million (US$88 million) and new orders were down 4%. The European economic slowdown is cited as being a major factor for the profit downturn. Reported by Hans Arens, Germany Correspondent ARCHITECT PRESENTS 7 WTC PLANS: Architect David Childs has revealed his plans for rebuilding 7 World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City. The building will be 750 feet tall with a concrete core for elevators and two wide fire stairways. Work on the actual design of the tower has not begun. In addressing the Community Board 1, Childs said, "Our greatest goal is to put back that shaft of light that comes from the north to the water." ASA CONSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION: The American Subcontractors Association, Inc. (ASA) and the Foundation of ASA (FASA) have signed a partnering agreement with the American Institute of Constructors (AIC) and the AIC Education Foundation that will encourage a higher ethical standard for professional constructors and improve the professional image of constructors. As part of the agreement, the ASA and AIC will seek recognition of the Certified Professional Constructor and Associate Constructor designations in public and private corporations. The agreement was signed at a formal ceremony at the recent ASA/AIC convention held in Las Vegas. DLS REPORT ON MAJOR ASIAN REAL-ESTATE MARKETS: Davis Langdon & Seah has released the "DLS Handbook Hong Kong 2002." Figures show that in 2001, construction costs dropped 8.3% leading some in the Asian construction industry to believe that 2002 will not see major increases in construction projects. In the Hong Kong area, there was little demand for commercial projects, with 2001 seeing a total of 505,000 square feet added to the office space market and a vacancy rate which rose modestly to 7.3%.
