i'll go first.

extremely high taxes.

#2 of 49 by slynne on Tue May 7 21:41:53 2002:

There are some nice parts of NJ.

But I think it sucks that they wont let you pump your own gas.

And they charge admission to the beach. Sheesh!

#3 of 49 by mary on Tue May 7 21:42:17 2002:

Our son is in New Brunswick.

He misses Ann Arbor. I miss him.

#4 of 49 by oval on Tue May 7 21:54:58 2002:

Newark smells like face full of bus exhaust.

#5 of 49 by shazbot on Tue May 7 22:15:42 2002:

New Jersey has an odd shape. Sort of like a mutated peanut.

just my opinion

This is silly.

Bruuuuccceee!! The Boss rocks!

And what about the Bonj?

You guys are idiots.

#9 of 49 by gull on Wed May 8 01:23:11 2002:

So is their slogan, 'The Garden State', just sarcasm?

#10 of 49 by other on Wed May 8 03:35:17 2002:

Anyone who questions why NJ is "The Garden State" has never seen the
upstate areas away from the Turnpike and the GS Parkway.

#11 of 49 by jmsaul on Wed May 8 03:48:54 2002:

Right. Under truth in advertising laws, it should probably be changed to "The
Half-Garden State," but part of Jersey is *very* nice.

#12 of 49 by rcurl on Wed May 8 04:47:50 2002:

New Jersey leads the nation in teachers' salaries.

Wait NJ rulez. Jay and Silent Bob are from there. Did you guys/gals realize
the "z" in rulez. Ya that means I'm hip.

#14 of 49 by edina on Wed May 8 13:29:58 2002:

It's also the home of the NJ Devils, a team I love.

#15 of 49 by brighn on Wed May 8 13:38:43 2002:

#13> Yeah, but they left NJ and went to Wisconsin to sell pot.

#16 of 49 by eprom on Wed May 8 17:21:06 2002:

NJ has a problem with racial profiling. Gov. Christie Whitman even
posed for a photo while frisking a black dude.

High Property taxes.

High Car insurance, even though every year <insert name of polititian>
makes a campaign pledge to get them lowered.

They don't sell beer in grocery stores. In some counties you can't buy
liquor on sundays except for at bars.

Newark smells.

Cost of college is one of the highest in the country.

To make a left had turn you need to get in the right lane and find a
U-turn (a.k.a Jug handle).

While driving on main roads most NJ drivers practically make a complete
stop to make a right-hand turn, rather than drive into the turn.

Check out NJ resident Tom Rockwell as Sudden Death at
http://www.suddendeath.org. You might find a sample of the
first track to his new CD; "New Jersey Lifestyle" on his new
Fatal Accident Zone CD.

#19 of 49 by rcurl on Wed May 8 17:29:16 2002:

New Jersey has the nation's highest median household income. This mitigates
some of the "highest costs" given above.

#20 of 49 by ea on Wed May 8 17:30:49 2002:

re #14 - they still need to trade for Miroslav Satan. Imagine the
merchandising dollars in that one.

#21 of 49 by krj on Wed May 8 19:52:36 2002:

My wife is from New Jersey, so I object to this item.

New Jersey is the only state whose two major cities lie outside its borders.

#22 of 49 by void on Wed May 8 20:10:51 2002:

Speaking of New Jersey, the Pine Barrens episode of "The Sopranos" will
be re-run this Sunday (the one where Chris and Paulie pursue the Russian
"interior decorator" in the snow).

#23 of 49 by brighn on Wed May 8 20:47:49 2002:

#22> Gets an image of Joe Piscipo saying, "HI! I'm from JERSEY!"

#24 of 49 by brighn on Wed May 8 20:48:13 2002:

er, that was from 21, not 22.

#25 of 49 by oval on Wed May 8 22:35:19 2002:

don't you mean "jwaysie"?

the teachers make more money there, but yet just recently they went on strike
and one of their main arguments (besides health care) was that their higher
salaries didn't mean jackshit when compared to the high cost of living there.

chemical dumping has coincidently coincided with an unusually hight number
of autistic kids born there.

people drive like insane people. yes, even more so than in NYC - although i
believe most of the crazy drivers in NYC are, in fact, 'bridge and tunnel
people'.

now, i have met some nice people from jersey. (okay, only one) and i also am
a bit of a Devil's fan too.

#26 of 49 by drew on Thu May 9 00:39:53 2002:

Everybody hates Joisey. But *somebody's* gotta live there.

#27 of 49 by eprom on Thu May 9 02:34:25 2002:

A few more reasons why NJ sucks:

Those refugees "sheltered" at Ft Dix, NJ a few years back,
were begging to be sent back to war torn Kosovo.

There's not a Hungry Howies, Cottege inn, Little Caesars
or a Hardee's resturant in the state.

You can't put a silly vanity plate on the front bumper of
your vehicle, because you are required to have front and
rear License plates.

You have to pay a $3 toll to just get out of the state.

#28 of 49 by rcurl on Thu May 9 02:49:48 2002:

That toll is to get INTO New York City. There is no toll to get into PA.

#29 of 49 by eprom on Thu May 9 03:03:56 2002:

Every bridge I've been on to get to PA or DE (The Betsy ross,
Tacony Palmyra, Ben Franklin, Delaware Memorial, Burlington-Bristol
and Trenton toll bridge) all had tolls.

There are a few other bridges in the area, but i'm pretty sure they
also have tolls.

#30 of 49 by senna on Thu May 9 03:54:25 2002:

The Devils have about 3 real fans, and can't even sell their playoff games.
They're an embarassment to the league.

#31 of 49 by scg on Thu May 9 06:10:47 2002:

Hmm... eprom's description of why New Jersey sucks could have been describing
the Bay Area, with the possible exception of the refugees wanting to leave.
I'd generally thought of those things as at worst neutral factors.

#32 of 49 by gull on Thu May 9 14:44:35 2002:

I don't think I'd want to live in the Bay Area, but for different reasons.

#33 of 49 by rcurl on Thu May 9 14:50:10 2002:

Re #29: the assertion was it cost "a $3 toll to just get out of the state".
The fact is, that is not true everywhere you can leave the state. Most
big bridges have tolls in both directions - some New York City
bridges being exceptions. However there are hundreds of roads crossing
the New Jersey border with no tolls in either direction. So, scatch that
claim.

#34 of 49 by aruba on Thu May 9 14:52:25 2002:

The weird thing is that when you drive out of New Jersey into Pennsylvania,
the sign says: "Welcome to Pennsylvania - AMERICA STARTS HERE".

#35 of 49 by rcurl on Thu May 9 15:21:50 2002:

You know, if New Jersey did not exist, it would be a long boat ride,
or big detour, to go west from New York City?

#36 of 49 by oval on Thu May 9 23:57:09 2002:

i consider staten island a part of NJ, not NY. what a disgrace.

#37 of 49 by rcurl on Fri May 10 05:59:59 2002:

Why? Proximity? New Jersey abuts New York, so is it part of New York?

I have lived in Tottenville, Staten Island, NY, and even went to school
there briefly.

Do you know how Staten Island got its name? When the Dutch sailed
for the first time into New York Harbor, they looked west and said
to one another "Iz dat en Island?".

#38 of 49 by oval on Fri May 10 08:51:04 2002:

i lived in snug harbor, SI and spent some time in NJ. i'd say staten island
belongs more with the NJites than the new yawkahs.

it iz un island but iz also a garbage dump.

#39 of 49 by albaugh on Mon May 13 21:37:01 2002:

I thought that NJ was the garden state because of all the stiffs the mob
planted there... ;-)
