Grex Agora41 Item 147: Will Grex ever get to the Point?
Entered by eskarina on Thu May 2 22:47:14 UTC 2002:

Its getting to be that time of year... Cedar Point opens on the 5th of May!
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in trying to go down there as
a group of grexers, on some date that works for people...

Anybody game?

        Mmmmm. Cedar point.

#3 of 83 by aruba on Fri May 3 00:40:19 2002:

I'd be interested.

#4 of 83 by scott on Fri May 3 01:13:07 2002:

Me too.

#5 of 83 by lowclass on Fri May 3 01:16:56 2002:

Don't think so. THe last time I went on a Cedar Point rollercoaster,
my back spasmed and went out. Mid-ride.

I do NOT intend to repeat that particular experience...

#6 of 83 by senna on Fri May 3 03:28:40 2002:

Mm. Cedar Point.

My only spasm problems occur on roller coaster that are too bloody small for
me.

#7 of 83 by michaela on Fri May 3 06:27:33 2002:

Mmmm...Cedar Point. Opening day is actually the BEST day to go.

Unfortunately, due to bad experiences last year, I need to lose about 20
pounds to ride every ride comfortably. I didn't fit on two of them since
they'd changed the benches to two-seaters. *grump*

Fortunately, they were rides I didn't care about anyway. :)

#8 of 83 by eskarina on Fri May 3 12:32:19 2002:

Okay, that looks positive... so what dates work for people? I unfortunately
cannot go on the 5th (its my mom's birthday, so I think I'd be in deep do do
since I'm, you know, HOME for the week).

I would vote for a Saturday in May, mostly because those are they days when
they are open from 10am to 10pm, instead of 10 to 8pm. They are also open
10 to 10 on May 24th, but that's a friday and I have class. I'd vote for a
weekday this week, but alas, they aren't open.

the schedule is up at http://www.cedarpoint.com, and then click on "trip
Planning" and you get to the schedule.

I vote for the 18th or 25th of May, or the 1st of June.

Saturday or Sunday works well for me; either should be fine. Sooner
is better than later.

#10 of 83 by senna on Sun May 5 04:57:20 2002:

Weeks don't work at all, weekends are only so-so. ;)

#11 of 83 by eskarina on Sun May 5 12:30:20 2002:

Do you have any day/specific date preference, Bob?

#12 of 83 by scott on Sun May 5 13:11:01 2002:

Weekdays are better for me, but most days would be fine.

Just make a quick decision; striving for a perfect day will never succeed.

#13 of 83 by tpryan on Sun May 5 16:56:35 2002:

When I tried a weekday in June trip to amusement park, I
did not take into acount the busloads upon busload of high school
senior trippers that pretty much went straight from bus to the
coasters without stopping at anything else.

#14 of 83 by senna on Sun May 5 18:55:34 2002:

I'm with scott. Make a decision, and I'll tell you if it works. :)

#15 of 83 by eskarina on Sun May 5 19:42:33 2002:

Okay. Due to memorial day/graduation related conflicts, I call June 1st as
the day that I am going to Cedar Point. Who is going with me?

#16 of 83 by senna on Sun May 5 21:00:23 2002:

What day of the week is that?

#17 of 83 by eskarina on Mon May 6 01:34:08 2002:

Its a Saturday. Its also the first day they are open until 11pm.

#18 of 83 by eskarina on Wed May 8 00:51:32 2002:

So if that doesn't work, someone else suggest a date that does work for them.
Or tell me what's wrong with June 1st. Or SOMETHING.

#19 of 83 by scott on Wed May 8 01:37:24 2002:

June first is fine with me.

#20 of 83 by grimaldi on Tue May 14 00:23:04 2002:

Grimmy is game :) June 1st eh?

#21 of 83 by eskarina on Tue May 14 17:25:55 2002:

okay, so on to the more specific details... of people who know they are
coming, who has cars, and who would be willing to offer rides to random
grexers who need them? (I'm not sure about my own car situation at the
moment. More news to follow.)

I'm thinking we should plan to meet at the front gate, between teh place where
you buy tickets and the place where you enter. If we get more than 15, we
can get group rates, but so far the response is way too small for that.

The park opens at 10, so lets plan to meet at the gate around 9:45 and enter
the park when it opens. Its good to get on the coasters early in the day,
because that is when most of the lines are at their shortest.

regular admission this year is $42 for the day. AAA, Meijers, and lots of
other places sell tickets at discounted prices, you just need to check these
things out ahead of time. Also, if you plan on going again, daily prices have
gone up, but season passes are $99 this year, so if you go 3 times you more
than break even. Just a thought.

It generally takes me about 2 hours from Ann Arbor, 3 hours from East Lansing.
Do you guys want to caravan or go down individually?

#22 of 83 by scott on Tue May 14 17:42:36 2002:

I've got a car which seats 3 plus the driver. I like the idea of caravaning,
so we could park together and such.

Drivers should check out the route down there, since it's got a couple of
weird sections.

#23 of 83 by eskarina on Tue May 14 17:55:24 2002:

Which route were we going to use? I usually go to extensive ends to avoid
the turnpike... maybe we could have walkie talkies in the cars...
I usually do this really funky thing where I'm on like 4 highways in toledo
and eventually end up on highway 2.

#24 of 83 by aruba on Tue May 14 17:55:59 2002:

I will also volunteer my car, which seats 4 or 5 if they're small.

#25 of 83 by eskarina on Tue May 14 18:00:41 2002:

the directions from the website:
south on 23, east on 475, north on 75, south on 280, east on 80 to exit 118,
turn right onto route 250

that doesn't seem any simpler than teh way we usually go. We just take 280
a little further south to highway 2, and avoid having to pay the toll on 80.

I agree with the directions on one thing, though. I think it did take 2 and
a half hours. So we should plan with that.

#26 of 83 by jazz on Tue May 14 19:04:15 2002:

US2 is actually considerably shorter than 80 to get to Cedar Point,
when it's not under construction.

#27 of 83 by michaela on Tue May 14 19:31:01 2002:

I agree with the U.S. 2 route. That's what we always used.

I can't make it, but I'd be up for another trip. :)

#28 of 83 by scott on Tue May 14 21:35:01 2002:

Probably cell phones would be better than walkie-talkies, since there isn't
a range limitation for the phones. We'd just need to remember to trade
numbers before starting off.

#29 of 83 by eskarina on Tue May 14 21:42:54 2002:

re 27: Did I or anyone else ever imply that this would be the ONLY time we'd
go to Cedar Point? :)

#30 of 83 by grimaldi on Wed May 15 19:54:45 2002:

I think I'm gonna bring a person along that expressed an interest so I may
have a car as well to stick one more person in comfortably...That person is
of course a non-grexer. so we shall see...

#31 of 83 by eeyore on Thu May 16 14:21:05 2002:

I might be joining up....I have to see how my moving plans are going.
However, I know I won't be working that day :)

Out of curiousity, is this a rain or shine kind of trip?

#32 of 83 by eskarina on Thu May 16 18:51:55 2002:

I guess we should talk about that starting when the weather forcast goes that
far ahead... right now we only get out to May 25 (which is super sunny in
Sandusky, OH right now). I guess it wouldn't hurt to set a rain date.

June 15th?

#33 of 83 by eeyore on Sun May 19 06:56:21 2002:

Okay, I will not be making it on the 1st. I get to play with Carolyn
instead :)

#34 of 83 by eskarina on Sun May 19 21:55:47 2002:

What are you doing?

#35 of 83 by carson on Mon May 20 13:15:01 2002:

(and can I watch?)

#36 of 83 by jep on Mon May 20 14:09:06 2002:

I don't like roller coasters and so don't plan on going, but I just
noticed the U-M Credit Union has discounted tickets for members.
They're $31 for adults. They don't have a discount for kids, but they
do sell tickets in advance for $20 each.

#37 of 83 by eskarina on Mon May 20 16:46:55 2002:

I know the MSU credit union has some deal.. not sure of the exact price...
and I'm a member there so I could get people discounted tickets if they want
them.

#38 of 83 by shazbot on Sun May 26 19:35:13 2002:

though i would really like to go. sorry

#39 of 83 by remmers on Tue May 28 15:45:28 2002:

Are there similar attractions near where you are?
