Date with email boy this weekend. Happy am I :) Now I must ponder
fashion options.

re #976- oooh, can I come see? <grins, adores kittens, as is evidenced
by mooncat continually asking her neighbors with the 5-week-old kitten
how the baby is and if she can see it> Plus kittens tend to be a lil
scared in a new place and hide until they feel safer. Hell, adult cats
do that too.

IHB- There are genuinely great people in the world and I happen to
know several. And, I head out this afternoon to meet with a woman about
volunteering at her non-profit foundation that works to improve the
lives, and the quality of the lives, of feral and older cats.

IHB I am currently typing from an island paradise called Ko Samui in the
middle of the gulf of Thailand. White sandy beaches, warm ocean waters
that dont get too deep unless you go way out. This place reminds me of
the Virgin Islands in a way. I spent this morning on the beach with my
feet buried in the sand reading as the tide came in close by.
Unfortunately I was too into the book and stayed out there too long,
getting just a bit sunburned. Tomorrow I must take shade in the palm
trees if I want to read!

btw, if you ever saw the Leonardo DiCaprio movie 'The Beach', it was filmed
right here. The island and jungle scenery isjust beautiful! :)

Hmm. I can't remember, is Samui the bigger one or is it Samet?

I think Koh Samui is larger. My memory's a little fuzzy. I hope you
enjoy Koh Samui, Richard. It's an awesome experience.

i'm so jealous of richard! (if i don't get off at the halfway point 7/10 i'd
be over there!)

hope you're having a splendid time :)

$120 for muffler replacement... I was expecting $200+, but the previous
replacements* were guaranteed for life, and (oddly enough) there were very
few other parts to replace.

* It's a Volkswagen, so for some reason it has two mufflers.

Well, complex analysis started to get interesting when we briefly dipped into
integrals, but now we are doing series, and so far they've been identical to
real ones, so I'm back into being abysmally bored. Even the grad students
read the paper or sleep during the class.

Apparently this class is also an engineering class and for that reason they
stay away from actual complex analysis, or something. After the math majors
complained again to the instructor he just told us that if we wanted to learn
more, take the grad level course.

This is a 400 level complex analysis course, but in functionality it is at
best a 200 level course. We haven't done a single proof, mostly because the
instructor is uncomfortable with them.

nothing, responding to i's question about the complex analysis class.

I guess in order to be appropriate my response should have been in the bummed
item.

(IHB I *finally* won the Wild West Cup, after playing the course probably
a dozen times. I shot 3-under [a two stroke win!] with Mitch, using the
Pinhole Club and the Big Air Club.)

Re: #985/987
Ah, so it's not 400-level complex analysis, it's 200-level complex
computation drill for happy-to-use-square-wheels-if-the-pointy-haired-
prof-told-'em-to engineers, and you're stuck there with a brain in
your head. Gak. Even my old copy of Kaplan's Advanced Mathematics
for Engineers is comfortable with deriving things and mild proofs.

Well, grex doesn't lack for graduate-level math geeks. There are good
books we can suggest that you can learn the real material from. Sounds
like some of your fellow victims might be interested in a study group.
Not knowing it will bite you at some point. So ask away as you've got
time & interest.

Scored a like-new Bodum coffee press at a garage sale, for a measly $1.

OooooOO. I havent had any time for garage sales this year so, even
though I already have a Bodum coffee press, I am *still* jealous.

re 990: from what I've heard the book we are using is good: Brown &
Churchill I think... it does far surpass the prof. In another week or so I
will attempt to have time and be interested in something other than sleep or
food.

what, may I ask, is a coffee press and why would one want one?
scott
response 996 of 1000: Mark Unseen   Jun 24 12:58 UTC 2002

A coffee press is sort of a littly glass cylinder with a metal-mesh piston.
You pour in hot water and coffee (or in my case, tea), let sit, then push the
piston down to separate the grounds. Makes great tea, much stronger than an
infuser type teapot. Eastern Accents on 4th ave. does it this way.

It makes the *best* coffee too. It's very strong but oh oh so good.

Carol uses a French press coffemaker on the weekdays and a paper filter one
on the weekends. (I don't drink coffee, but I make hers sometimes.) The
coffee can be ground much finer for the paper filter, and Carol likes the
taste of that better. But it takes longer and uses up a paper filter, so
she only does that on the weekends.

BTW her French press is a Bodum, and the glass part alone costs $15 new.
So Scott got a really good deal.
