At least, down-to-earth.

Looks really good to me, too. Your word, Rane. Oh, better make it
official:

Is it my imagination or are most words falling in less than 15
guesses (usually around 12) lately? Has it been that way all along
or are we just getting too good?

after 953 frsponses, i think you're all too good. maybe a 8 letter game?

response 955 of 1001: Mark Unseen   Jul 24 21:35 UTC 1994

We've tried other variations, working up to a 28 letter word game. It
didn't get very far. "After the fall", we settled on 6.
I am thinking of another diabolical six letter world.

Right. And here is the traditional response:

List of guessed words are in /u/rcurl/letter.match Rule of the
game are in /u/rcurl/lettermatch.rules (except that we are playing
the six letter version). Say, has anyone tried it yet as a car game?

I think the competition has become fierce, and the slackers have gone away,
so both of these would drive down the solution time.

You're probably right, srw. I try to throw in a few gratuitous guesses
to stretch things out a bit, but...

master

We have been averaging under 15 guesses for some time. I know
because the sheets I use to keep track of the guesses have 15 rows per
column, and I usually don't have to spill over to a second column.

There certainly is a "hard core" here. I found that after not paying much
attention for a couple of weeks (because of our flood at home), it took
a concentrated effort to climb back into the "winning circle". I can
imagine that new players don't get enough feedback and practice time
before each game is over. Maybe we need leagues...

leagues might help. i'd be in the wild guess league.

We do give some analyses of how people arrived at the winning guess.
Maybe we should do that more often? Or set up a game summary and
analysis item (to look at completed letter match puzzles with hind
sight) -- it's hard to do that in the context of an ongoing game in
this item. Don't know how many people would be interested...

If any of you people reading this but not responding think it looks
like a fun game (it's addictive actually) but don't know how to
start or improve, ASK!

I am asking! I couldn't get to the rules....computer illiteracy will
frustrate the heck out of you. Can you give me explicit step by step
instructions on how to get the rules? e-mail them to me. Thanks
This looks fascinating and I hate lurking.....;-)

Oh wait....is this a word version of mastermind?
rcurl
response 971 of 1001: Mark Unseen   Jul 25 16:15 UTC 1994

Enter more /u/rcurl/lettermatch.rules at the Ok: prompt. I forget
how mastermind works, but I recall someone else making an analogy (but
pointing out the differences). Briefly, the number gives the number
of exact letter and position matches between the hidden and guessed
word. Proper nouns are not allowed. You cannot guess twice in a row (etc).

If, for some reason, you still can't get to the rules, arwen, let us
know and we'll e-mail them to you (assuming you can read mail).
