Neither one of those quotes spelled it the way the OED does.  I wonder how
they decided it was a word, spelled the way they spell it?  What criteria
does it have to meet?

I suppose at some point it was decided that while full would stay full,
-full would become -ful.  I imagine to make English spelling is difficult
as possible
