AWK! Where was that AWK! when I needed it. Yes, I made an error with
equine 1 aruba
However, justice will out, as, despite my egregious error, aruba is
VINDICATED. The word is *oblong*, and aruba is @IT@.

Hmmm... Yes, could someone explain how that AWK program works?
I am thinking of a word, and the number of letters in my word is perfect,
and it ain't 28.

Drat. I gave up on any word with an N in 5th position due to "equine".
That awk script is in /u/srw/match.awk (it *correctly* reports the
letters that match :) If anyone wants to go it a step further, I have
a shell script called "do.lm" that helps you maintain the letter.match
summary file (do.lm is also based on the match.awk script).

Okay, let's try it again...

[You already wrote a cheat program. And here I spent the better part of
two hours writing one myself! Can I guess again? Or do I have to wait
for the next time my word gets counted? If I can guess again, here it is...]

Rules permit you to guess again, just so long its not twice in a row. To
prove this..

But that fills the 5-word quota.

Which cheat program are you referring to? None of the scripts
mentioned so far do anything other than make administration of the
game (*not* from the guesser's side of it, that is) easier. If you
wish to do all the tabulating and reporting by hand, with the high
likelihood of making an error, such as we just had, go right ahead.
But don't expect me to be patient about it any longer. The tools
are available, use them. Let me repeat, none of the scripts mentioned
are for the guesser's advantage -- they are for the person who is in
"charge" of the word (the one who's "it").

[Your right, sorry. The files you refer to are only good for the person
who is "it". The script I wrote is for helping the guessers (namely
me). It keeps track of the words and letters in the game the way that I
was doing it by hand previously. It doesn't help me guess at all, but it
takes the bookkeeping out of the game. And taking the bookkeeping out of
the game is what I refered to as cheating. You still have to do the hard
part and come up with guesses! Sorry if I offended.]

OK. I better get with it, and modernize. Where/what is that script,
and where are the docs?

Incidentally, I'm not bothered at all by infrequent errors by "it".
It makes the game more interesting to detect and hunt down the error, and
then point it out, to "it"s great embarrassment. But if everyone wants
to be so *serious* about the game, I'll play along...;->.

response 913 of 1007: Mark Unseen   Apr 27 20:10 UTC 1994

Well, it's just that after I spend time on the guessing end marking
down the wrong letters *by hand* and then I find out that guess
number 3 way back *there* was screwed up, it means I have to spend
just as much time marking down the wrong letters all over again.
Considering this is a game and I probably shouldn't be taking the
time to participate in the first place, I rather just do the hand
work once, thank you. Considering if we do take the game seriously,
that one misstep in the results can send one down a long, wrong
trail, it's a frustrating occurrence just from that angle.
The awk script is /u/srw/match.awk. My "manager" shell for match.awk
is /u/kentn/do.lm.

Hmmm... We went over by two while I was at work. What to do?
the rules don't mention this contingency. I think I'll respond

11 pm.

By the way, if anyone can come up with a word with a perfect number of
letters that is neither 6 nor 28, I'll give it to you. ;->
