Terne is a word, but not a bird. A tern is, though.

(As far as I know terne is some kind of metal plating, but
I've never seen it as a bird.)

Terne plate is iron plated with a lead-tin alloy, to protect it from
corrosion. It is much like tin-plate, except for the use of lead. In
fact, what we do with solder to "tin" iron, is closer to "terne".
