And of course, telling us what your problem is would help.

I power-cycled the DSL modem because I couldn't get to grex. When I stopped
by, the WAN and LANR lights were blinking, the LANT light was out, and the
other lights were solid. When I turned the modem back on, and the PWR, TEST
and LINK lights were solid, the WAN, LANT and LANR lights all began blinking.
So we should be back on the air.

A Reminder:

Grex will be down most of the day on Saturday, 27 November 2004,
to back up its disks to tape.

I'll update

        http://www.hvcn.org/info/grex/

as I progress.

The disk backup failed: every tape I tried, fresh from the wrapper, generated
"write" errors.

I apologise for the lost day.

You lost more of the day than we did. Thanks for all your work. Is the tape
drive perhaps going bad?

Personally I've seldom had good luck with tape. CDR disks work somewhat
better, but occasionally one does eventually go bad on me. I'm not sure about
DVD-R/RW, as they haven't been around long enough yet. My best results for
backing up have been with an extra hard drive, plugged in for the purpose then
removed when the backup is complete. CF cards are also good, though a bit
expensive per-megabyte at the moment. They're coming down, though.

External harddrives are now in the range of $1 a Gigabyte.
BTW new floppy disks are also near $1 for 1.44 Megabyte.

I've started an item in garage, #173, to discuss back-up options. Once the
ideas have coalesced, we can start an item in coop for the decision. Or
the garage item can be linked to coop, as the fairwitness prefers.

I think the best idea is to get someone COMPETENT to do the backups.

Thanks for reminding us at 11pm the night before that the system would be down

I believe the notice was in the motd at least 2 days prior to the back.

Geez, no [attempted] good deed goes unpunished around here... :-(

re #104
I believe the notice was in the motd at least 2 days prior to the back.

I believe Grex was off the Internet all of Wednesday, came up til 2pm on
Friday, then disappeared again and didn't come back
up til late Friday night. How is that "2 days prior" when the system wasn't
even up a full 2 days straight?

**This is from M-Net's Grex conference where most people check for a
status(contrary to the idea anyone ever goes to HVCN):

#18 Ken Josenhans (krj) Fri, Nov 26, 2004 (14:16):
Grex came back up late Wednesday night, was up for all? of Thursday,
and at 2 pm it rolled off the net again. I haven't tried direct dial
 yet.

#19 Ken Josenhans (krj) Fri, Nov 26, 2004 (20:20):
I tried direct dial; it looks like the actual Grex computer is down,
 not just off the net.

#20 Slow on the uptake (justcarl) Fri, Nov 26, 2004 (21:07):
same here, as of 9:10 pm (Est)

#21 Ken Josenhans (krj) Sat, Nov 27, 2004 (00:15):
Grex was rebooted and came back sometime Friday evening.

Some of us have no active account on mnet and do not want to create one
just to periodically check Grex's status, assuming mnet newuser is even
running.

re #106
That's another good point. What's the fallback when the grex.org website goes
offline? Is it possible to have a redirect to a "down for maintenance" page?

I think Joe had that message in the motd for a good long time,
but he'd have to give the specifics.

And Joe kept Grex's status updated at:

http://www.hvcn.org/info/grex/

Thanks again, Joe. Let the rest roll, please, it doesn't
speak for many at all.

I saw the MOTD message for several days; my sense was Monday or Tuesday before
the Saturday along with the address at hvcn for update info.
