Well, I'll sit this one out, then. I don't have time to start all over with
a new dictionary.

I could see this comin' a while back and decided I
was outta this one. Let me know when we're back to
using words that are at least found in most dictionaries.

Please don't go away mad, friends. My "standard" dictionary is totally
pedestrian, and I think I can fairly say that everyone has *heard* this
word - but paid no attention to it (or did not bother to think how it
was spelled). The puzzle also remains, and the word is determinable by
logic and imagination. It is just a different game (it appears) than
just intelligent guessing.

Well. I certainly won't go away mad. I cannot guess a word at the
moment because I made the last guess. There is a tremendous amount
of information already determined by previous guesses. If it is all
correct, (and if my logic is correct) there are only 17 combinations
possible. I have looked at these 17 combinations, and none look
like words to me. So either (1) i don't know rcurl's word while I'm
looking right at it, or (2) my logic sucks, or (3) rcurl made an
error [unlikely since he's using a computer]. Meanwhile I'll wait
for a guess from someone else and then continue eliminating these 17
cases 1 at a time. (I don't know what else to do.)

You all started with 11,881,376 possible words, and Steve has narrowed
it to 17, he says. What's left is like the last one-third mile after
travelling the distance to the moon. Or, should I (gasp!) provide a
hint?

Ok, well, the competitive spirit seems to have left this game, so
I will post my logic in hopes that someone will find a flaw or
(failing that) someone will recognize the word from the 17 remaining
possibilities. Here goes.
close = 0 algae = 2 therefore a.ga. = 2
Let's assume g is the third letter, then a..a. = 1
Then annal=2 => .nn.l = 1
attar=2 => .tt.r = 1
assai=3 => .ss.i = 2
Since none of these n,l,t,r,s,i are in common,
we need 4 letters to fit in 3 spaces!
Therefore we conclude that g is not the third letter
a..a. = 2 So now we have two letters.
From aster=1 we subtract out the a's and get .st.r=0 .
From adapt=1 we subtract out the a's and get .da.t=0 .
From adder=2 we subtract out the a's and get .dd.r=1 .
So it must be that ..d..=1 and we now have a third letter.
So far we know a.da.=3
subtract that out of assai=3 and you get .s..i= 1.
But we already deduced .st.r=0, so we know ....i=1 and we have a 4th letter.
Now we know a.dai = 4.
The only remaining letter cannot be d, e, h, l, m, n, r, s, t
So there are only 17 possibilities.
I have looked closely at all 17 and none look like words to me.
Does anyone think differently?

naiad. This is what my electronic dictionary came up with.
and incidentally, it only listed the one word.

aodai The traditional costume of Vietnamese women.
If this is right srw should do the next word as he
brought it home. But then this can't be correct as
it's certainly not a word "everyone has heard".

Good going chelsea. I just increased my vocabulary by 1.
I am perfectly content to let you run the next game given that
(a) you knew the "word" and (b) it wasn't even my turn to guess.
In fact, I published my logic because I hoped this would happen.
I could eliminate a few letters as being less likely, but I
basically had no clue whatever other than that.
Of course if you *want* me to select a word, I be happy to oblige.

The illustrious combination of srw and chelsea get the cup. I would
posit that everyone has heard it on the news, or in movies, or "in
passing". It is pronounced ou'dy'. What with all the coverage that
Vietnam has received on CNN, in National Geographic, and elsewhere,
over the past ten years, I cannot believe that the word has not passed
before everyone's eyes or ears. HOwever, I could believe no one
remembering it, because it would just be an unpronouncable oriental
sound. Well, we survived *that*: shall I change my dictionary?
