Re 822, hmmm, m-w.com says the definition of "pablum" is a trademark
for infant food, but then gives "pabulum" as the meaning (which makes
sense). But then, I didn't give infant food as a definition for
pabulum...just intellectual substance and insipid writing or speech.
Anyway, I think I've discharged whatever duty I had to provide a
definition and source.
As for alyssum, m-w.com says:
Main Entry: alys·sum
Pronunciation: &-'li-s&m
Function: noun
Etymology: New Latin, from Greek alysson, plant believed to cure rabies,
from neuter of alyssos curing rabies, from a- + lyssa rabies
Date: 1548
1 : any of a genus (Alyssum) of Old World herbs of the mustard family with
small usually yellow racemose flowers
2 : SWEET ALYSSUM

I want to (very briefly) re-open the discussion sparked by #797 above.
Specifically, I want to address a point raised in #803 and repeated in #805:
In #803 Paul talked about wanting to win, and in #805 Mark admitted to
an o-c impulse. I've had the same 'problem', but I solved it by changing
the "victory conditions": If I don't want to run a game, I simply start
guessing words that will make the solution obvious to anyone who _does_
want to run a game. I "win" if my supposition turns out to be right;
I _really_ win if my suppostion is wrong, but I still get it right before
the end of the game.
It's really _not_ whether I win or lose, it's whether I get to play at all.
:)

That sounds healthy. However, if everyone plays that way, no one will ever
"really win". :)

I think the idea is that people who win on a regular basis -- you, gelinas,
etc. -- may want to use that strategy to take a bye now and then.
Then again, I've found that playing is more fun than winning, because when
you win, you have to make sure to log on regularly, and you know what the word
is. The fun in being "it" is that you get to watch other people's logic unfold
as they get closer to your answer.

Oh, I suppose there *is* a common enough word that matches the clues so far.
*sigh* That's what I get for guessing blind. The old saying holds true: I have
found the enemy, and they is me.

(especially since, if it starts "opo", it ends "ssum" [alyssum 4]... there
can't be a lot of 7 letter words that start opo- and and -ssum)
