I'd kill for an opportunity like that. My guitar prof lives right in
town, and the store he teaches at is right in the neighborhood, just
about, and I can't pony up the money-- tied up in other higher
priorities =(

This week begins 2 weeks of Gordon music learning theory level I certification
for me, and like arabella, I am ANXIOUS. I also have two other classes for
the first summer term finishing up, and I need to still study for those, plus
now I have Gordon stuff from 8:30am until 4:30pm.
So as exciting as Gordon certification is, I'm just really really hoping to
not go insane in the next week or two.

Gordon music learning theory is this thing that Edwin Gordon spent a lot of
time coming up with... and then some of his doctoral students made up a
teaching method to go along with it. After this course I will be officially
level I certified in the teaching method.
One of the professors at MSU was one of Gordon's doctoral students, and
Gordon's learning theory has really caught on at MSU and permeates our ear
training and music ed classes.

Is this applied to particular instruments, or it general for all
music courses? Even for "music appreciation"?

IBB Mooncat is currently at home nursing a Migraine . . . which means
it's going to be irritating for her at work for the rest of the week.
IABB it loks as if I'm getting a Migraine too, and it's not helping
that I have to sit in front of the computer, the lights are florescent,
I'm allergic to dust, and there is a mold problem due to a flood six
years ago, and I'm allergic to mold, too. If it doesn't go away, you
can bet your ass I'll be headed home.

I used to get really horrible migraine headaches. They went away after
I got some therapy. I think I have had one or two in the last 10 years
or so. Its not as immediate of a suggestion as other people might have
but therapy turned out to be a pretty good long term solution for me.

Mooncat's feeling somewhat better, and was asleep at least when I
stopped at home for lunch around 11. My headache is settled down to a
dull roar, though I can occassionally feel it. More than likely it's
because I'm concentrating on something else. I suspect the worst of it
will hit tomorrow.

btw, any idea why it's women who tend to get migraines?
IBB I didn't get the job.. the Spokane office decided to transfer
someone down to the Yakima store. But the store manager said if that
hadn't been the decision, the position would have went to me =) I
agreed to let them keep my resume on file should that arrangement not
work out.

jaklumen: often the cause of migraines in women is hormonal changes,
which is why it is quite common for young women in late teens through
[early] 30s. Headaches in general tend to increase in girls after
puberty, and women are 3x more likely to have migrains than men.
BTW, it's believed that cluster headaches are more common in men than in
women. Here's an informative page on migraines from the Mayo Clinic, if
you're interested. Both Mayo and JAMA's websites have some informative
literature on migraines and other headaches.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?id=DS00120
IBB my headache's here today, with more symptoms, including that
irritating tingling feeling, almost as if a body part has fallen asleep.
So I think it's going to hit soon.
I'm sorry to hear about the job, Cap'n. Hope something great comes you
way soon.

IBB- of the migraine Bhelliom described in earlier posts (The worst
I've had in a very long time) and I'm still recovering from the
odd/tentative after effects.
IABB- my Red Wings jersey seems to have gone missing. The last I
remember having it was in late winter 2001. - Sarah, did it get mixed
up with your stuff while you were moving? I ask because I know that you
used to borrow it from me.

Now that I'm working again, and doing more dance, my knees and ankles are back
to acting up. Nothing serious, just stiffness and achiness and the fun of
wondering whether I'm doing any lasting damage...

I seem to suffer from both types of migraine.
Is that possible?
Regarding the symptoms I'd say I am.
I definitely always see auras right before an attack. (classic)
The attack itself lasts a couple of hours (for which I am thankful, but
enough imcapacitate me for an afternoon or so)
But on the other hand I am overly cheerful, witty and energetic the day
before an attack and the points in the direction of the other type.
There you got it, there are men suffering from migraines.
I have had them since as long as I can remember. Thinking back I
realized I have had symptoms going back to my twelfth or something.

Rane: Gordon started out interested in very little kids and how they learn
to understand tonalities, sing in tune, etc.
You can get level I certified in early childhood, elementary general, or
instrumental music. I am taking the elementary general.
Gordon would say that it is useless to put a kid on an instrument who can't
already sing well (meaning sing in tune, as well as be able to echo back tonal
and rhythm patterns and perhaps improvise in different tonalities), because
then putting them on an instrument does 2 things: it involves teaching them
way too many things at once and turns them into a mere button pusher instead
of a musician, if they cant "hear in their head" what they are going to play
before they play it.
Gordon would never go for "music appreciation". What's the use of
"appreciating it" if you don't understand it?

Anne - Steve bought me a Red Wings jersey in February 2000, and I brought it
with me when I moved out in April 2001. It's the only one I have.
Also, have you tried those face masks they sell at drug stores? They look
like a Mardi Gras mask, and you keep them in the fridge. They (supposedly)
lessen the pain a bit.
Syl - there were many factors in my decision, but the breakup and lack of
companionship in this area were the big ones. My good friend has a spare room
in his mucking huge apartment (in Northville), and he's charging me only a
wee bit of rent since I want to go to school and get a new car.
I'll miss Dave, Kenn, and Kae, but there are many good things about returning.
It was a hard decision, but I'm set in it.

I twisted my ankle this afternoon, and while prompt treatment with
anti-inflammatories kept it from swelling up and getting all painful,
it's now obvious that I've got some damage. I just hope it's minor
and heals quickly.

re #793- Hrm, okay, thanks for letting me know. :) I'll just have to
keep looking for it.
Actually I have a face mask that can be put in the fridge to cool off-
just depending on the headache it's not always helpful. (Plus I really
don't tend to remember things like that - or basil steam - when in the
midst of migraine pain... my thinking gets al out of whack)
Rick- Congrats on being one of the small percentage of males who get
migraines! <grins> Actually, I think my older brother Jim gets them
too. From personal research, it's not unheard of for males to get types
of migraines- just some types are more commonly in women (and vice
versa).

Sarah: Well, it's not as if you're running away from something, so it's
a healthy decision. And you're going to be staying in Northville?
That's about an hour from A2, and houses Northville Downs (Harness
Racing). Are you still on course to go to school in the fall or are you
extending you start date due to your move?
Rick: I didn't say males didn't get migraines, silly. :) I don't
necessarily think that you can only get one type of migraine. For me
the symptoms always vary, which is why it is still difficult for me to
determine what is a migraine and what symptoms am I experiencing. I
believe I've had them for some time, but simply never knew what they
were. Sometimes I get the aura and sometimes I don't. I also get
symptoms anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days before the
attack. Talk about courtesy. :)
