I'll just say this. I have not bought anything that is considered "new"
since 1984. Does that sum up what annoys me?

It's my assertion that all music is either good or bad (on the continuum).
The style of the music doesn't afford it automatic goodness or badness.
I.e. music is not good just because it's written in the classical style,
and music is not bad just because it's contemporary (20th century).
While arguments can be made that one style of music is more
sophisticated than another, and should be viewed as more "serious," this
does not make it inherently better. I'll take a good Beatles tune over a
bad Sousa march any day (I happen to enjoy many styles of music, rock&roll
and military band among them).

Most of the opinions boil down to personal tastes. But with any style of
music, one can analyze it for its quality, and arrive at some judgement of
"good" or "bad".

Impossible. It is my assertion that the terms good and bad are inapplicable
to music. It is entirely a matter of taste. It is only when one defines
a genre can one consider judging goodness and badness within the framework
of that genre. For example, playing out of tune, is considered "bad" in
some diatonic frameworks, but I've heard ethnic music where that is not
a consideration.

I'll grant that "success at meeting intent" is valid for determining good
vs. bad. So if one intends to write good ("correct" ?) classical style
music, and ends up with unintended or overlooked dissonances, thru lack of
skill, then one has written bad classical style music. However, if one
intended the dissonances to be there, using avant-garde style musical "rules,"
then one hasn't written bad music (at least for THAT reason). Literature and
music certainly do have enough elements of style so that they can be judged
on their relative goodness. I don't know enough about art to say that,
although I suspect it's true as well. So I don't buy "it's just a matter of
taste."

Spoken like a true 16 year old. Vidar, you are truly annoying in this item.
Take your response 60 in this item where you use "shit". The same word
you berated skeeze for using in the early parts of this item. get with it.

skeeze? SKEEZE? Who is he? I've heard of skeez, but never skeeze.
(sorry about jumping over a possible typo, but if it is someone's
logind, correct it.)
My item goose, my right to be a pain in the buttocks. Look, imbecile (sp?)
people have mood swings. It happens to everyone. Now back to the
original topic:
I hate all rap for reasons of my own. It is discussesd in another item.

They Might Be Giants, Boston, and DJ Quik get on my last good nerve.

When is Boston going to get a new song? After two decades and six albums
of the same chord progressions, isn't it time that they bought a couple
of new chords to put on their albums??

I'd rather they just break up and leave their recording contract to a
band that deserves it.

I can't really say that I hate musics as much as laugh at them.. "Signs" by
Tesla is quite a gem, that rap song that goes "I tip my 40 to yer memory" a
capella, anything by Whitney Houston, Hammer, the Cure, milli vanilli, I could
go on forever...

I would like to nominate, probably because I really really like the group,
as the worst song ever recorded, a Van Halen cover tune (Eddie wrote it, not
Roddy), drum roll please <brbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbr>:
"Jump" by Aztec Camera
(For those few of you who heard it, my condolences.)

Anything by "Ace of Base."

response 94 of 134: Mark Unseen   Aug 21 01:37 UTC 1994

Don't get me wrong, Melinda, I'm not about to defend the pop giants "Ace of
Base", but I feel that they would not be half as annoying if radio fools
wouldn't program their songs to play twice an hour. Overplaying of even a
decent song can kill it.

response 95 of 134: Mark Unseen   Aug 21 17:08 UTC 1994

I'll admit that the first few times I heard each Ace of Base song, I thought
it was OK, but now I can't stand them, because they're played out. The same
thing happened with, among others, Bryan Adams "Everything I Do, I Do It
For You". Generally, DJ's today pretty much suck.

I'm not even sure if that's what she's saying, but I'm sick of it already.
But it's not a bad song (Ace of Base'), merely an overplayed one.

response 97 of 134: Mark Unseen   Aug 21 18:47 UTC 1994

Sorry, I beg to disagree. I really don't care for that type of music -- a
situation exacerbated my the heavy rotation. It's not good dance music,
it's not good lyrically. The only thing I can say for it is that is has
a hook that sinks deep into cranial tissue and hangs on like a parasite.
I think I would've LOVED this music when I was in junior high...

response 99 of 134: Mark Unseen   Aug 22 05:05 UTC 1994

I agree. I didn't say it was a good song. It's too mediocre to be called
anything at all. ("I never said good song, I never said bad song, I never
said any song under the sun, whoa oh oa" -- To slaughter David Bowie)
