Hey sarah, how can you knock mariah carey? She could find stronger
material but you'll rarely find anyone with her vocal range and
talent. In terms of vocal talent, mariah and whitney huston are miles
beyond any other female singers in the business today. Its just
a pity they arent better song writers.

Gack. They *aren't* songwriters. They sing pop because the money and because
it's easier than other music (an oversimplification, to be sure, but I think
Mariah Carey said she liked singing pop becauit was easier than opera).
In the area of good and *interesting* female vocalists, I've been listening
to 4 Non-blondes lately...

Mariah Carey's range and smoothness is extremely impressive. I like her songs.
I've been listening to Live's CD and it rocks. Check it out.

Shameless plug: Speaking of interesting female vocalists, come hear this
non-blonde sing on Sept 22 from 5:30-7:30 pm. I'm the headliner at a
fundraiser barbecue picnic thing. Northeast side of Ann Arbor. More
details later. I'll be singing folk songs, traditional ballads, and
some rock/blues stuff.

"I Swear" (or whatever it's called) always makes me change the station.
Other than that, a couple of the "I'm a complete F*ck-up, pity me" sort
of songs out there piss me off.

Richard, I like Mariah Carey's voice, except when she decides to do that
dog-whistle-pitched screech. I don't like her *songs*. Big difference.

Mariah does have an incredible voice... but yes, her songs are trite and a
waste of her talent. Anybody remember Menudo? :)

Unfortunately I vaguely recall that group...and I'm trying not to.
For upbeat music, check out Everything (they have a homepage on the Web),
Dave Matthews Band, and Fighting Gravity (formerly Boy Oh Boy)!
I saw the potential in Whitney Houston but she didn't get the good
songs. I doubt she'll ever be a great singer in the ranks of the
superstars. How about Bette Midler or Barbra S?

I like bette ok but i hear her latest album sucks, though it is a tribute to
her husband. Call me a doofus but I can't understand why Dave Matthews Band
is as successful as it is. Or Blues Traveler.. hey sound identical to me
almost. Maybe I feel like this because it just isn't the style of music I care
for. I saw a Debie Gibson box set the other day. Phew.

To clarify between Dave Matthews and Blues Traveler. BT is much more
diverse. Their older album (the one before their latest) has songs that
sound very different from one another to the extent that you wonder if
its the same group. I don't know about their latest CD 'cuz I have only
heard one song--the one that sounds like Dave Matthews. Added bonus:
DMB is from Charlottesville, VA (Home of the University of VA).
In regards to Debbie G., on July 4th, a bunch of people from my
singles group went down to the mall in dc. One strange individual brought
a disc-player and was listening to all things, Debbie G. while there
live performances and other people all around him. Geez. Talk about
anti-social.

I love Blues Traveler, their singer/harmonica player is really really
talented, but he is so big and fat that I am afraid he'll end up
playing in the heaven cafe with Jerry Garcia before long.

Or he could live happily for many many years.....
I like Mariah's voice- except when she screechs just to show everyone how
wonderfully talented she is, and just cuz she can.... it's annoying.
Bette Midler has a wonderful voice, but I think she's starting to get a
little more then egotistical- I mean her latest album is "Bette of Roses"
puhleaze.

I guess that you could say that i have tremendous respect for mariah, I
myself take voice lessons and I know how hard it is to get a range like hers.
I only have a three octave range wich is pretty damn high but she has a four
octave range, I would kill for a range like that...

Yeah, but if you had it would you include notes from it i songs just
to show everyone how talented you were? If they fit into the song I
wouldn't have a problem with her... but they don't, they are just addins.

I disagree. I think that Mariah's "screeches" are one of the best parts
of her singing, because they are the only parts where she breaks out of the
rather stupid songs, and just makes music.

I once had a friend who was a little weird-- and he used to play the cello
in the school band, but when he was at home he used to play "Sunshine of your
Love" on the cello and nibble on Meow Mix. I kid you not.
Whenever I hear those opening riffs of "Sunshine of your Love" it always
brings back a mental picture of my friend, Scott.
