Hmmm, assuming the second band is Pink Floyd, I'd guess the other was
Steel Breeze, who took their name from a Pink Floyd song.

Was it Kate Bush? Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd did discover her, and plays on
all (or most) of her albums.

Yes, the second group was most definitely Pink Floyd.

Re 76 - Steel Breeze? Sorry, never heard of them.

Re 77 - Kate Bush write something for Playboy? Yeah, right!
(No, it wasn't her. Besides, she's an act of the 70s/80s/90s.
The fellow I'm thinking of is known mainly for his work in
the 1980's, as far as I know.)

BOB GELDOF!!!!!!!!!!
Has to be him, with the Wall and all that happening in the '80's!

response 81 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 3 21:33 UTC 1994

YES!!! Thank you!

Bob Geldof wrote a short article in Playboy, thanking Pink Floyd
for giving him the lead in their movie "The Wall."

You're next, juggler.

(why does this item make me feel more and more out of touch with the 80's?)

I've got the new question!

This Canadian Band (not Rush or Triumph!!!) was produced by an ex-member of
Bowies famous back up band The Spiders From Mars. (ex-member meaning that
he quit And that he entered that big rock and roll band in the sky!)
The band in question was popular in the mid 80's and were known primarily
for one song. While not a MAJOR hit, it got heavy MTV rotation for a
couple months... can be heard a lot on 89X (especially on the retro block!)...
was included in the soundtrack of a major (at the time) movie. Name the group
AND for extra credit, name the person that produced them.

My only guess is Men Without Hats, no idea on the producer.
(If it is MWH, I can call my sister, she probably still has
her old tapes!)

(the name that comes to mind is Glass Spider.)

(I know I can get this one. I used to watch CBC's "Video Hits" all the
time! That's where I first heard Maxi Priest's cover of "Wild World"!)

carson: are you thinking of Glass Tiger? They were Canadian.
How about Saga?

response 87 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 7 16:10 UTC 1994

(I *was* thinking of Glass Tiger. To tell the truth, the first name that
came to mind was White Lion, but I *knew* that wasn't the band I was
thinking of. Thanks!)

First hint: The soundtrack of the movie that this song was in was recently
released after a long wait...

It's by a Canadian Band...

response 92 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 13 16:10 UTC 1994

More clues? I'm too lazy to go look at that soundtrack. Let's see,
one-hit wonders from the mid-80s.... Martha and the Waves? Wax?
Hmmmm

response 93 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 13 22:05 UTC 1994

Wait, maybe I have it. The Flirts? That's the only song on the soundtrack
that seems to fit. (The producer, I know, is Mick Ronson)
brighn
response 94 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 13 22:20 UTC 1994

(It better be the Flirts, else I've got that damn Jukebox song stuck in
my head for no reason (cause there are no reasons, what reason do you need
to be to-o-wo-o-old? Tell me why I don't like Mondays) )
Oh good. Sir Geldof (damn what the Queen thinks) has replaced it.

I cheated and egged it out of Kimba, but the answer is the Payolas. Can I ask
one now?

The topic is Cover Songs. This question has two parts, so pay attention,
and you'll have a blast!

(Also, be wary of bad puns. They are all clues.)
(a) This songwriter had such a blast writing this song for this timely
Californian group, he recorded it himself years later when he released
a solo album under a stormy, but fertile, alias. Name the songwriter,]
the song, the original group, and the songwriter's "group." {Hint: The
songwriter shares a first name with the timely group's producer and a
famous rock flutist.}

(b) This lowly fellow produced many of this attractive fellow's songs,
but decided to cover a song written by the attractive fellow that he
*hadn't* produced. There was quite a display: they should've taken
it outside. Name both fellows, and the song in question. For bonus
points, name both fellows' back-up bands. {Hint: The songwriter got
his name from a more famous predecessor.}

(Feel free to work on them one at a time, or both simultaneously, although
I doubt anyone will get them both right off. Don't be afraid to bomb.)

response 98 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 16 01:27 UTC 1994

(B) The second fellow is obviously Elvis Costello, his back-up band
was (and is) the Attractions, but I can't remember who produced him!
brighn
response 99 of 159: Mark Unseen   Jul 16 03:10 UTC 1994

He was produced by a variety of people, but perhaps his most frequent
producer (the lowly fellow) nicked his first name from the Saint
who inspired Santa Claus.

The first question proves to be harder. The timely group is not the
Time (that would be TOO obvious), but is an acceptable answer to
the question posed by the Time's first album title (an answer which
is pleasing to many schoolchildren).

(My goodness, he speaks in riddles!)

One more hint, for now: The debut album of the songwriter for the
first question ws called cloudcuckooland.
(no riddles there... straight fact)
