Staff can be paid, but if we could afford a paid staff, little things like
rent and Internet connections would be drop in the bucket...

But as tsty says, this is drift.
Anybody got some leads on cheap Ann Arbor office space? No windows, no A/C
(a vent would be needed), power and room for phone lines, and 24 hours access
to staffers.

Me, too. Perhaps the Grex Board could make an *authoritative* decision
on whether or not they are willing to share space with M-Net.
Also--Grex needs a *lawyer* (not me) to take the appropriate
action to appeal the City's decision. I think the appropriate route
is to Washtenaw County Circuit Court.
And yes, it will take a bit of time for the City to start
effective enforcement action. I really think the Circuit Court needs
to hear about Grex' unique circumstances and make an orderly, deliberate
decision on these complex issues, don't you?

501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit corporations may hire employees - and pay them.
(I'm not sure where the idea they couldn't arose - consider any charity, such
as the Red Cross.)

Grex Board is meeting this Wednesday, so we can include co-location in the
official discussion.

There's an article in today's Ann Arbor News about Grex's Building
Board woes. It's in the Local (C) section, with a big pointer to
it in the news index on p. A2. Quite well-written, with quotes from
Valerie and Scott. It explains Grex's situation quite clearly, and
even provides Grex's dialin number and telnet and http addresses.
The reporter is Susan Oppat, who has done articles on local online
activities before and used to be an M-Net user. She knows what
conferencing communities are about; I can't think of a better
person to have written this piece.
Wouldn't be nice if someone who knows about suitable space sees the
article and gets in touch.

I suggested that Arbornet investigate some of the "unusable" space, found
in shopping centers, some office buildings, etc., which sits empty due to
bizarre location, small size, etc. Apparently, dpc followed up on this
idea, and found a few potential locations. I suggest you ask him about any
that might work for Grex.

Good suggestions. The Michigan Municipal League building has oodles of
space in a basement, of all places, and might be interested in working
with Grex. Would any of the techs be interesed in working with the League
for money as part of a package? Maybe they don't need it anymore, but
it does not hurt to ask. They have a very modern facility. Last time
I was there they had some video conferencing equipment that was not
being used effectively and needed ideas. Probably not the same situation
now, but who knows. Interested? Email me and I will put you in contact
with them.

Probably good to have the article in the News, but it did convey some
misinformation, such as CCI being a "holding company" for Grex, and
that Grex has "members", when in fact the corporation has members. Also,
CCI is never identified as a non-profit corporation. At least it used the
term "community computer system". [Yes, I realize that most of the public
would not know the difference between what it says in the article and
what really is, but sometimes people that matter do understand the
differences.]
Pickel was making up after-the-fact excuses for his action. There are
no flammable liquids in the "dungeon", and the space for people in the
room is no wider than the doorway, and hardly ten feet deep. If a fire
started (Ipresume with lots of sparks...), anyone could be out of that
room in less than a second. And, then what about the basement itself?
Its used as a public service area by the rooming house.

Actually, it occurs to me that this article could work in our
favor in an unexpected way. Recall that one of the Board members
was convinced that people worked in there all day long - because
he saw a photo of popcorn, steve, and srw in the Dungeon in
an Ann Arbor News article. Obviously he believes anything he
sees in the paper. Now that they've run an article saying
"Grex should be allowed to stay", maybe he'll vote in our
favor at the appeal! >8)

Pickel stated all his reasons for not liking us at the meeting, before they
voted. Their stated reasons at the meeting and in the paper were the same.

An excerpt including Larry Pickel's explanation (he's introduced
as "Ann Arbor building department director"):
[Valerie quoted as....] "Essentially, what the city has done is
shut down this little, community service by enforcing restrictions
that don't really apply."
But "it's a safety issue," says Pickel.
"In a room that size," Pickel says, "any fire would involve
the room very quickly, the smoke would come down (from the ceiling
where it collects) very quickly, and there would be a potential
life safety problem there."

Yep, that could be a problem. Looks like we should eliminate all
bathrooms too. They have the same problem. In a room that small, there's
definately the danger that a fire will start, involve the room, fill the
room from the ceiling down to me, and choke me into unconsciousness before
I notice it. Yep, Yep, Yep, that sure is a danger.
Morons.
