You are using that non-existant loophole to hurt Grex right now, by using it
to jam our communications lines. Have you seen *anyone* agreeing with you
on this? Did you see *anyone* agreeing with you on the staff/board separation
issue? Did you see *anyone* agreeing with you that Grex is a freenet? Do
you notice things like that? Do you understand what concensus building is
about? It's not about proving your point or winning your way. It's about
finding solutions to problems that almost everyone can live with. It requires
being sensitive to the trend of opinion and finding solutions that most people
can live with.
A while ago we had a big debate over pornography on Grex. Some of us wanted
to establish some kinds of controls. We weren't able to get an agreement on
that, but the rules about no gifs on webpages turned out to be a way to take
the edge off the issue for the moment. So we didn't really resolve the issue
to anyone's satisfaction. Nobody won a glorious victory. But we found a way
to get by that everyone could live with for the moment. That's what its about
here. That's what we are trying to achieve.
But everytime we start discussing an issue, you latch on to some stupid side
issue and start yammering about it, apparantly perfectly oblivious to the fact
that nobody agrees so there is no chance that the discussion is going to lead
to any productive result. You've got to take your noble stands and defend
them to the end, and if everyone is opposed than that only makes you more
rightous and heroic. Meanwhile, you've managed to completely jam all attempts
to actually discuss anything that actually matters. That hurts Grex a hell
of a lot more than these fantasies about tiny flaws in the bylaws leading the
the overthrow of Grex.

Not true. I accept when any idea I have is unworkable. Andmore to the point,
I dont waste my time attacking people likeyou just did Jan. Your last
response has no place in this item Yo could have sent me email ifyou
wanted to gripe. Maybe I do get carried away sometimes but th e vast
majority of myposts are as constructive as anyone elses's. Just
because I suggest an ideaa doesnt mean I think its necessarily better than
anyone elses, but that I think its worth discussing. Like I made several
suggetions in the "wha t to do about email" item. I dont know if my ideas
are workable, but it doesnt hurt to discuss them and such suggestions are
in the context of tha titem. Why do I have todefend myself for just
participating in this conference?

You don't attack anyone? Funny, I seem to recall a three-screen-long
response a few weeks ago saying that I was the reason Grex was so
screwed up, me and my libertarian philosophy.

I diddnt mean that to be a personal attack, I was atackking the
libertarian philosophies that Ithink too many folks around here have, which
gets in the way of grex acheiving its goals (IMO of course) I have
never questioned anyone's right to participate in this qconference or the
value of anyone's contributions.
The sort of flaming that remmers and jac are dircting at me is something
Imight have expected in mnet in the old policy conf where it was thenorm.
But I really did think there was more of an air of mutual respect around
here.

Normally there is. And normally remmers and janc are two of the most polite
and respectful human beings I have ever met anywhere. The fact that you've
provoked them into entering some of the responses you see here speaks volumes.

I just entered a kerouac item, item 137, to further discuss this topic.
It includes responses 75-79, if people want to reply to any of those.

I feel that you guys are wrong and should not just attach no one with out just
cause he was just voicing his opinion. And a opinion never hurt anything Grex
is going to lose membership if you keep up this nonsense. And as far as you
go robh I said no offense I just used you as an example because every where
I go I see your name in Grex. You did not have to say that stuff. Also I
really don't appreciate this type of argueing over a simple issue as either
change the rules or tell me no. Thank you and no I will not join Grex and
I will discourage my friends at Mckendree college to join either.

I think you may be taking my comments personally, marlo. I didn't
say, "marlo is an idiot because she asked that", because I don't
feel that way. But I'm still sorry if I offended you.

Marlo, you also need to hang around a while to really understand about
Kerouac. We're pretty idealistic about free speech, so we don't even consider
things like preventing Kerouac from participating, but we are allowed to get
rather snippy at times when pushed far enough.

#131...no you're not...read #138...noone deserves to be singled out
for different treatment. This conferencing enviroment will never
be healthy unless everyone is treated the same.

Since no one is "the same", the premise is stupid.
Moderation? Self Control? Manners? Decorum?
All are nice, but stupid is still stupid - and incurable.
(at least ignorance CAN be cured)

I don't think anybody has been attacking marlo here, but maybe she is seeing
something I'm not. What we've said is that in order to be a board member,
a person must be a member of Grex. Marlo can become an elligible member of
Grex by sending $18 to our treasurer. If she doesn't want to do that, but
somebody else feels that she should be a member, somebody else could also send
in that $18 for her (with her permission, of course). Board members must also
be able to make it to meetings. It takes around eight hours to get from
McKendree College, in Lebanon, Illinois, to Ann Arbor. I've made that trip
a few times. It's a bit tiring, and not something I'd want to do just to
attend a meeting and go home, but it's certainly possible.
It looks like there was a misunderstanding because marlo mentioned something
about robh as a joke, saying she didn't mean any offense to robh. kerouac
then claimed that he has never attacked anybody, to which robh responded, "You
don't attack anyone?" marlo apparrently thought that she was the "You" in
Rob's statement. She wasn't; kerouac was.

The heading of the bylaws name both CCI / Grex, which mneans to me that
the word grex is a nom-de-plume for CCI. But this is all word games. Just
register/dba/an Grex. Also, when it comes down to a decision on the
issue, the chair of the board can issue a decision, which can be contested
at a board meeting if any board member wishes, by objecting to the decision
of the chair (which is then voted upon). [I favor handling matters fairly but
expeditiously, without spending excessive verbiage on them.]

tsty has been nominated, but has not yet accepted or declined.

tsty is not a member, and is therefore not elligible. nsiddall has now become
a member, according to the "Becoming a member" item in Agora.
With this field of candidates, it looks like Grex will be in very good hands
no matter who wins.

There's nothing that says non-members can't run, is there? If TS runs
and is elected, he could become a member before his term begins.

Or become a member now, if he wants to run, and support grex whether or not
he gets elected. I don't knw, and it's related to the previous question of
whether or not a non-member cqan be elected that Kerouak raised. It's not
relevent in this item, which is for nominations, so maybe another item?

I wouldn't look exactly favorably upon a candidate that ran with the
intention of becoming a member only if he or she won. In fact, I would not
vote for him/her. I think the problem is self limiting (though I also
believe that only members can run for election).

I don't wind. There is nobody there to run "against".

Nov 7 17:57 UTC 1996 |
Admittedly the point is really moot because no member is going to vote
for a non-member for the board (or very few of them will) Which is
another reason why there shouldnt be a hue and cry if a non-member wants
to run.
Maybe the whole idea seems silly, but if it reduces misunderstandings
among non-members who think they can run, when they in fact can't, its
worth addressing. Not like its the end of the world either way though.
