I think we got a letter from the IRS a while back saying that our dues were
not deductable, didn't we?

I just had a related communication with an attorney, who's view was,
in very salty terms, that the IRS *always* tells you you can't do
what you really can, if you ask. In fact, the whole system is set up
so you have to prove your deductibility in the face of an assumed
answer "NO". (These observations come from my and others' experience,
not from IRS letters to a general inquiry.)

Rane's right, I think. A few years ago I heard the results of a survey on
the IRS's telephone help lines. Some large percentage (don't remember, but
for some reason the number 40% comes to mind) of their answers were in fact
wrong, and if you're audited it's no defense against penalties that you did
exactly what the IRS told you to do in response to a specific question.

I agree with Rane, that the IRS will say "no" whenever possible
and put the burden of proof on the taxpayer.
I still wouldn't deduct anything I donate to Grex. I don't claim a
donation as deductible unless the company could furnish me with a
statement they are a qualified organization and supply a receipt.
(This is usually one and the same piece of paper for a 501(c)3
organization.) Is Grex prepared to do that?
Now, I'm not saying I wouldn't donate to an organization like Grex, I do.
I simply don't avoid paying taxes on the money I donate.

And I agree with Mary. No person would make a large donation to an
organization that has not had its charitable non-profit (non-foundation)
status recognized by the IRS, as it is just risky. And the question of
what degree of risk an individual will tolerate is becoming moot, because
Grex's cumulative income is probably going to exceed the critical value
this year (I have figures from Dan, which I have not yet digested...I
need to normalize my bile production, before I get back to them) ;->).

Well, you don't have to be so "personal" about it! "Bile production" sounds
like the subject for a separate item, perhaps? <adbarr wishes rcurl all
good recovery mechnanisms, since adbarr knows rcurl will object to a little
prayer of good health. ;-) >

i disagree with chelsea, i do and will continue to deduct what i can
contribute to Grex. If the irs has a problem with that i guess they
will have to spend as much money as i can make them spend amking asses
out of their idiocy - with ful publicity about the assininity in
which they have chosen to involve themselves - and references to
Steve Jackson Games, et al.
thre is a threshold, indeterminate, at which the cost of tea is less
importnat than the tax on tea leaves. Any one from the Boston environs?
