We can find babysitting. No problem, I know a lot of kids up here that
babysit all the time. Reservations, no problem.

Now we NEED to think of some activities, but a talentshow? I dunno
about that, and babysitting is DEFINATLY no problem. I don't
know, a get together...at first, maybe some sports (teams?) I don't
know.

And here is a fundrasing idea! A grexer auction! People could bid to
have a date with a grexer! <heh> <shrug> It works!

I don't think we need much in the way of planning. I think that,
once we get together, we'll find things to talk about. ;-)
Some scheduled things like classes might be in order if enough
people want them.

I would really like some kind of teaching lectures. I have nobody
here to learn anything about internet from. I have to experiment and
then teach other people. I could use some good pointers on unix.

(w.r.t the Internet, read /roadmap/roadmap.intro)

I'd like to suggest that some organization is usually appreciated by those
attending a "convention". There is no requirement, of course, that any
attendees (except the organizers!) participate in organized events, but
they give structure to the event, and many will attend. A few "classes",
or perhaps "workshops", with lots of time for questions and discussion,
would be very appropriate. "Field trips" are another popular category - a
group visit to the Dungeon should be arrangeable, even if drop-in visiting
isn't desirable. A group dinner in the evening gets as many as want to to
see each other, and get acquainted. Then, there is the after-dinner
speech....

An open mike might be cool with people playing guitar
(filk singing?) poetry reading, computer based rants, whatever?

Setting a schedule will depend on whether we have a full blown weekend event,
a single day long picnic, or a two day event.

Some activity ideas from my vaults:
Intramural sports (volleyball, football, soccer, softball etc.)
Open Mike/Talent show (Filking, stand up whatever...maybe Grex skits?)
Classes on UNIX and how to master the Grex system at basic, intermediate, and
        advanced levels.
Scavenger hunts (I mean OBSCURE items and random teams)
Tours of local attractions/sightseeing (This would vary according to where
        the event was held obviously)
Lots of free time...
Cult movies (RHPS, eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Heavy Metal, Sid and Nancy etc.)
PRG and wargaming 'tournaments' (I suspect a lot of Grexers have interest in
this. This could also include computer gaming 'contests')
'Cookoff' (See who can make the best chili, burger, etc.)
General info classes (Maybe someone can teach a class in something they excel
at and others would like to learn)
Volunteer time (As a unit...GREX performs some public service)

All of this of course is in addition to the usual socializing and BSing that
will be entertainment all its own.

I'm excited that we're getting IDEAS now. Let's keep it rolling!

Regarding #82 and #83. If you don't have anything constructive to contribute
please have some respect for people who are trying to organize an event for
YOUR benefit.
Don't come in here trying to flame. If you have some personal attack then
email me about it. Don't detract from work that's being done here.
Now...if you have something constructive to offer...

I'd like to know what prompted #82 and #83. I'd guess that those folk
don't like organization, but just want to hang out? If so - that's fine,
since none of the suggested organization is mandatory. I've been to
many conventions with very structured programs, in which *most* people
participated, but some just hung out in the campground saying hi to
friends. That's whjat they liked, and that's what they did. The time
and place was provided to do what they pleased. Now, let's move on.

#85 I am not trying to flame, I am trying to get an event organized.
When a lot of people provide thoughtful responses and honest input it is
demoralizing to have such an obvious and insulting response like we had
in #82 and #83. If trying to put together an event that everyone can
enjoy and wanting to keep other interested people contributing is what
you consider a flame . . .so be it.
#85 is obviously written to get this type of thing off this board and pro-
mote a convention. I wanted this whole thing to end there.

Welcome to Grex. Kindly check your ego at the door!
...I was thinking <gasp!> that if distance is a problem for so many, why not
start (oops!) with a couple of 'regional' get-togethers? Sounds as if some of
you are doing this on an informal basis anyway, but I'm thinking of maybe three
or four medium-sized events. This seems like a way to get a *real* fix on
interest, and find out what kind of events will fly.

p.s. ref #85: remmers, aren't you some kind of Grex 'official'? Just for the
record, I have never seen wolfmage stoop to personal attacks like so many
others here seem to do. Is that what is meant by flaming?

(I really hope this doesn't turn into a flame war or anything, but I should
just point out that the response remmers was replying to seemed a lot like
a flame.)

My response was very appropriate. I want to go to a bbs conven, noa
junior high school picnic.
These people from up north should organize their own thing. It's stupid
to have an a
Ann Arbor based org meet three hours each way away from base. It would almost
necessitate an overnight stay.

Personally, I feel that this convention sounds like a wonderful idea, but,
I have been observing some rather juvanile comments made by some, withno
purpose (that i can see) except to tear down some really good ideas.
Fighting never solves anything, it only makes it harder to reconcile our
differences. I really feel that this would be a wonderful event, but the
negative comments aren't helping any, constructie critisism is one thing,
blatently rude comments are entirely another. I'd also like to say at this
point that i am all for this convention, and i'll help out in any way i can.
You're doing a great job Wolfmage <IMHO>

By the way -- if you're eager to meet other Grexers on a smaller scale than
a convention, there's a Grex pot luck dinner scheduled for Saturday January
14. See item 23 for more details.

Re #89: Well, I'm a board and staff member, but I'm speaking for
myself here of course, not in any official capacity. In #85 I was
thinking of a couple of earlier responses (#43, #65) which I thought
showed an uncalled-for lack of patience.

And since we're just a few self-selected Grexers shooting the breeze at
this point, and discussion's very preliminary, I don't see how the
location, or much of anything else, is "settled", or how anything that's
been said can be conclusive about Grexers as a whole.

But I'll shut up for now and let folks get back to planning. If I have
any ideas, I'll let y'all know.

Personally, I think it would be a good idea to have a separate "convention"
in the north (obviously anyone could attend) and I think it would stop a lot
of the bickering. Two separate planning committees could get to work and make
this thing happen

response 97 of 259: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 05:23 UTC 1995

I would suggest that those people talking about planning a convention
continue. If anyone has good ideas to contribute, they should do so. If
anyone doesn't like what is being planned, they do not have to attend.
This will not be the *only* Grex convention, if it occurs - just the
first. Things will evolve. They will be held in one place, or another.
It hardly matters where the first one is held, if there is the interest
and sufficient support to ensure a good attendance. I would suggest,
though, that the arrangements reach out to as large a group of grexers
as possible, to maximize the conviviality and information exchange.

Look...We don't need two seperate conventions. There is no reason that
Northern Michigan people cant travel down state. I'm from Gaylord too
and I wouldn't mind going to AA. I would like it to be in Gaylord,
but it's not like I wont come just because I have to travel. Please...
lets stop argueing about trivial issues like location and discuss
events and what we want to accomplish by having a convention.
And please, everybody, stop the flaming. The people who arn't involved
don't appreciate reading it. Just take your flames to e-mail.

response 99 of 259: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 06:45 UTC 1995

I think by far the best event will be just the chance to meet other
Grexers and talk in person. My experience with lots of other Grex
gatherings says that if nothing is planned we will find stuff to do. If
things are planned too heavily that will take the spontenaity out of it.
