What #67 and #74 confirm is what I said in the first place: 0/0 is
indeterminate - so you have to back up in order to evaluate it. I
not infrequently come across it in evaluating relations, especially
for boundary conditions. I even write it down (with a ! to mean
"damn!"). But then I do back up and go to the L'Hospital for surgery
on the expression.

Re #75: So you have nothing to support your claim?

A mathematician, a chemist and the village idiot were arguing
mathematical theory when suddenly a bolt of lightning struck the idiot,
and he realized that this was the humour item and shut the hell up. The
moral of the story: resp #69 was really funny.

re #77: I've seen very little that supports any of his claims in any of
the items he spouts off in. This is just another example. What a weasel.

lol@#74 -- "It might be good enough for a court of law, and
certainly good enough for any successful politician or journalist, for
whom facts are at best an inconvenience."

Jamie must have a terribly frustrated sex life to find that entertaining. ;)

How would you know?

(If by any chance the "chemist" in #78 was meant to refer to me....my
degree is a ScD Chem. Engineering (MIT), with a minor in mathematics,
and I've taught graduate statistics at UM for many years. I am not,
however, well grounded in Analysis - i.e., number theory. I tried but
lost blood from Dedekind Cuts.....)

I, ah, wouldn't go so far as to call myself well-grounded in either analysis
or number theory, but insofar as I did study them in college, they seemed
quite distinct fields to me.

Jamie, what are your credentials? I don't recall you claiming to be an expert
in mathematics before the last week or so, but maybe I just wasn't paying
attention.

Aruba, I write 0/0 and the only thing sloppy is my handwriting. You know:
3/4 = 75 0/0
1/2 = 50 0/0
59/100 = 59 0/0

#85 was in response to #82. However, it accidently fits #84 (somewhat).

87: In six weeks, I'll have a b.s. in mathematics.

response 91 of 257: Mark Unseen   Mar 29 23:08 UTC 2002

Then why do you know so little about math? What are the most advanced
mathematics topics included in that b.s.?

response 92 of 257: Mark Unseen   Mar 29 23:11 UTC 2002

I know quite a bit about mathematics, but I never said everything I posted
was true.

That's okay. We figured out on our own that it wasn't true. :)
