Carolina failed in its first of three chances to eliminate Toronto. Chance
#2 is Tuesday night in Toronto. Chance #3 which I hope will not be necessary
will be Thursday night in Raleigh.

Amazing... no discussion at all in this item.
It's Carolina vs. Detroit in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Hockey's the game with the flat plastic ball and the bent bats, right?
The bats are used for hitting the other players, or the rubber thing if
the other players are missed, as I recall. The rubber thing seems
smarter than the players, as it gets hit less often and less hard.
Like anything that's basically French (R-O-Y is pronounced "wah" which
can *only* happen in French; the whole game must be French) it seems
incomprehensibly silly. Is there really a team called the Mighty Ducks?

Yes, there really is a team called the Mighty Ducks. Yes, they are
owned by Disney.
The Finals start Tuesday. On paper, Detroit is a dominant team, and
should win the series easily. In reality, I think that Carolina will be
able to keep it pretty close, and probably steal a game or two. But, in
the end, I still think that Detroit will be the ones holding The Cup at
the end.
As far as the officiating goes, we're likely to see 4 different refs
through the course of the playoffs. My best guesses would be: Kerry
Fraser, Don Koharski, Bill McCreary, and probably Mick McGeough. I'm
less sure of the Linesmen, but I'd bet we probably see Ray Scapinello,
Brad Lazarowich, Greg Devorski, and one other. (although, of the people
likely to be reading this, I'm probably the only one that cares about
who the refs are ... well, maybe Senna too)

I just can't resist poking a little fun at hockey once in a while.)

Most of you reading this item by now have figured out that I'm a Carolina fan
through and through. I've gone to most of the playoff games so far, watched
or listened to the few that I wasn't able to attend, and I love it.
Carolina has a good team, with lots of youth and lots of depth. They are
bigger and more physical than Detroit, and for the most part are faster
skaters. Our defense is good and our goalie is good, though of less "stature"
than Hasek (Irbe is only 5'8" :)
Arturs Irbe will be the reason Carolina wins or loses any of the games. I
don't expect Carolina to get too many goals past Hasek, so Irbe is gonna have
to steal the show if we are to win ANY games.
For what it's worth, I full expect Steve Yzerman to hoist that Cup at the end
of game 5 or 6. Hopefully 6, as I'd rather have Carolina at home when their
season ends, even if it means losing.

Nice. The Stanley Cup was here in Raleigh on the day that Adrienne was
admitted the the hospital. Any other day besides that and surgery day, I'd
have a picture similar to that one :)

re #87 - I was also there. I just don't have my pictures developed yet
(I know, I know, I really should get a digital camera, I just can't
afford it) I was also pictured briefly (maybe 1 or 2 seconds) on WXYZ
TV 7 as part of their feature on the Cup's visit to Ann Arbor.

Detroit came out tonight looking a little (lot?) flat. They didn't seem
to be able to penetrate the zone, and they had a hard time controlling
the puck. Irbe made some nice saves to keep Carolina in the game.

Detroit couldn't penetrate the zone because that's the way Carolina plays -
their system is to smother the puck at center ice and force Detroit to dump
it in. Detroit prefers to skate the puck into the zone with fancy footwork
and such. This bodes well for Carolina if they can continue to keep Detroit
off its game, and stay on theirs.
Theforechecking was intense!

Well, Detroit pulled off a win late in the third with two quick goals to break
a 1-1 tie.
So the series heads to Raleigh tied up 1-1.

Yeah, and with a half minute left, two fights racked up some seven penalties,
or so. Why on earth would people start a fight like that when the game's so
clearly over, and just needs the clock to run out? ={

They weren't actual fights, as no punches were thrown, no 5-minute
penalties doled out. Brindamour got in Lidstrom's face, and McCarty
came over and pulled him away. And it got a bit silly after that.
Game 3 at Carolina Saturday night will be big. If Detroit can win that
one, things will be very fine-a for the Wings in Caro-lina! :-)
