I'm sure Rane could have found this definition:
(From 2d ed. OED on the web, http://www.hti.umich.edu/dict/oed/)
"boopic bo,o(hook).pik, a. rare-1. [f. Gr. bowpij (f. bouj, bo- ox + wy
      eye). ] Ox-eyed.

1854 Badham Halieut. 66 A collyrium for the eyes of horses and
                bo-opic patients."

Okay, it's a little weird (right up there in obscurity with "nuplex"
:), but I see you all were struck by the various interpretations that
come to mind when you don't know the definition... Such a non-intuitive
pronounciation, too.

Did we come close to eliminating most of the letters of the alphabet
on that one?

Congrats, Rane, you're up.

Whew! None of the online dictionaries that permitted searches with
wildcards had the word. Yes, I've looked up the word now - in that /oed/
which is in my bookmarks. Well, that one was a real challenge. First time
I can remember that the game went into a letter elimination. I'll add it
to my book of obscure words (yes, the first and only up to now was
nuplex). I'll be back with a new word when the sweat evaporates....but you
can begin guessing: I won't look before I have a word.  8^}

Oh, and we had almost eliminated all the letters for that second "o". It was
clear for a long time that the word was bo*pic, and by the end we knew * had
to be j, k, o, or z.

Figured we were running out of letters there (all those zero guesses
toward the end).
