Having caller ID has in fact been discussed on occasion, just because of
concerns that we could get into trouble, & the fact that Ameritech keeps its
own logs seems like good enough reason not to bother.

Right. These days, the best way to be anonymous on Grex is to dial in. If
you got into doing something seriously illegal, you could still be traced
because law enforcement people can get records of your calls from Ameritech.
This is a bit extreme for tracking down party pests though.

Everyone dials in to somewhere,
or they use networked computers which are usually even harder to track down
(University Unions, etc.).
The issue was, how anonymous is the Net, not how anonymous is Grex....

brign stated the issue well. I just want to know who is steaming open
my mail, etc.. Steam away, but not in the dark. "Mail" is a symbol.

Many people dial in somewhere, but most times they don't have an account
unless they have very clearly identified themselves to the place they dial
into.

There are places in Michigan, for instance, to dial in without an account?
News to me. Every place *I've* called does.
Maybe in other parts of the country, but not in Michigan, not anymore, and
I'd heard Michigan used to be one of the *easiest* places to get unauthorized
access.
Now, if you instead want to argue that many of the haqrs are using stolen or
borrowed accounts, that I'd buy. =} When I'm in the Detroit area, I use a
friend's system simply because access is easier.

So, who wants to be memebership chairperson?

Doesn't look like anyone wants the job.

There are free internet accesss terminals at the library.

Have you ever been on any Asian country ?
There are many non-profit organizations in Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea.
Fortunately, there are no (perhaps never) Asia-American or Africa-American on
Grex staffers' name list. Otherwise .......

Why is that fortunate?

Somehow, I can't seem to decrypt that "wfy"s text... It was either an
ATTEMPT at a compliment or a backhanded slap at some percieved racism..

Do not be too harsh on wfy's text. She is not a native speaker of English,
and I am pleased she is going to the trouble of responding here. If something
doesn't make sense a few simple questions should sort it out.

Well, offered way way back there, and no one commented.

Like I said before, I bring 4 yrs af being on Grex to the job. I should know
what works and what won't.

  <Waves a BIG red flag>

 Yes, I want the job!!

ummm... that wasn't "harsh", merely a n attempted analysis of the syntax
and content...

I think we had three or four volunteers, and Jim seems most adamant. I also
think Jim will do a good job. Perhaps the board should take some action on
at the next meeting?

Paul, in #73 you asked why its hard to find twits at times. Besides
the fact that others have mentioned local dialins being reletively hard
to trace, there is another problem, that being that many other sites,
maybe even *most* other sites are so innefficient at figuring out who
did what when as to be useless. There are many times that I've sent
mail to a site concerning a user, and that administrators of that
site never respnded. Or, after repeated poking, would say, "I'm sorry,
we don't keep log files longer than nn days" and that would be it.
There *are* some places that have responded in a timely manner, and
we've been halped by those. Unforunately, I really do think that most
places are just barely capable of keeping their sites on the air, and
don't have the extra expertise available to help track down problems.

As far as "How anonymous is the Net" goes, I'd say that most places
are entrely tracable, *provided the tracing is done quickly* in the
event of a problem. There are still pockets of unauthenticated net
sites, but they do seem to be disappearing. Lately I've notied that
most of them seem to be in libraries, where the tools they use (Macs
and Windows machines) don't readily accomodate authentication systems.

...The sad part about it is that as various sites have abandonded
their anonymous systems, its put more pressure upon the remaining sites
that still offer such. Grex, being half way inbetween the two can
remain just as it is for quite a while, I think, barring government
mandate.

TO get this item back on track: I think Jim would make a good
membership chair.

Omni has indicated that he would love some help. I believe he has set up a
new conference to organize the committee to boost membership. If I remember
right, the conference can be found by typimng "join member"
omni
response 98 of 98: Mark Unseen   Aug 10 06:19 UTC 1996

I need lots of help. All those interested in helping and being on the
committee should e-mail me, and join the membership conf.

I want to form a committee, and use the conference to glean suggestions from
the rest of the users.
