re 74: I'd continue your example and say that newuser goes beyond
the 4 or 40 keystrokes, and gives people information equivalent to
400 or 4000 keystrokes -- severe overload, so that they lose all of it.
If newuser took 4 keystrokes, and pointed users toward a program that
did the other 40 keystrokes, users wouldn't be overloaded, and they
could run the 40 keystroke program as many times as they needed to
in order to set things up in a way they like.

Re 73: Some parts of "change" work, but a number of its features were
either never implemented or were turned off because they didn't work right.

I've walked both almost-total-novices & computer professionals through newuser
a few times, & I've definitely seen both confusion & information overload with
both groups. (The computer professionals were indeed confused by the key
identification, BTW, because their experience did not involve the terminology
being used.) The editor-selection question also provoked a lot of anxiety &
confusion. (This was a while ago, & that question may have changed by now.)

I think I agree with John that newuser is not a good place to try to educate
the user at length. I'm not sure what is going to work better, but the sheer
length of time it takes to go through newuser means that most of the info
will be forgotten immediately. In fact, I suspect most people won't remember
how they've answered most of the questions by the time they're done; this was
certainly the case with people I walked through it.

Well, I just watched as a 13 year-old ran newuser. He didn't have to ask
me anything. He even knew what to do after he logged in the first time.

Age has less to do with it than experience...I'm sure the average 13 year
old would have much less trouble with newuser than my 80+ year old grama! :)

Well, he was a novice Windoze user, unfamiliar with a command line interface.
I would say that this says something about newuser.

The source to newuser has usually resided on Grex. At the beginning,
the source lived on mdw's machine at home. Once it was brought over
here, it was the copy that Grex used for changes.
When we had our passwd system crash of what, 8 months ago or so,
Marcus took the code back to his place at the UM, so as to be able
to work on it, and get it working with the shadow system, such that
adding new users takes seconds, rather than minutes. Because of the
disk instability problem of late, we haven't moved it back over. I
believe Marcus has ACL'd the source such that I can get at it. I
personally haven't tried moving it over here since then because of
the disk problem. Without putting words into mdw's mouth, I am farily
sure we have access to it. After all, it lives and works on arbornet
and nether that I know of, and probably several more.
