I think that may be partly a regionalism; I've heard it from other mountain
folk.

I use it - I even had them, once. I'm a New Yorker / New Englander, where
it was common.

My dad remembers real iceboxes. I think my mom does too. Michael's folks
have one on their boat; looks a lot like a 'fridge...

In particular, I had a nice one in my dorm room. Kept the beer cold, and
one could chip off ice for the drinks. I'm sorry I didn't keep it - they are
worth a "mint" today.

So were glove boxes once used for gloves? Why was it necessary to keep gloves
in one's car at all times? This one has always puzzled me.

Umm...lack of a heater and a breezy convertible top? Actually some
really old cars had an open-air driver's compartment and an enclosed
passenger compartment. Thus the driver might like to keep a pair of
warm gloves handy.

You also had to repair the car frequently at unexpected moments, so gloves
were needed for that.

You still need gloves for motorcycles. Some fancier motorcycles have
electrically heated grips.
