A mordant is also an insoluble metallic compound first deposited upon
cotton which allows dyeing of the fabric with dyes that couple with
the mordant. This use is as noun or a verb. I don't see the immediate
connection with the above adjectival use. Dye mordants, as chemicals,
are not particularly biting, caustic or pungent.

Webster's Unabridged offers:
2. (Dyeing & Calico Printing) Any substance, as alum or
copperas, which, having a twofold attraction for organic
fibers and coloring matter, serves as a bond of union, and
thus gives fixity to, or bites in, the dyes.
I think it's a stretch. ;)

(Re #731: I agree - but I think the problem is that what is a very
uncommon use for us may be more common in other languages. In Webster's
Online the following definitions of "bite" (n) are among a number:
5 : the hold or grip by which friction is created or purchase is obtained
6 : a surface that creates friction or is brought into contact with
another for the purpose of obtaining a hold
The chemist Henry tried to get out of this pickle by substituting the
word "basis" for the use of "mordant" in dyeing, viz.
"1826 Henry Elem. Chem. II. 375 The latter class, however, may be durably
attached by the mediation of what was formerly called a mordaunt, but has
since been more properly termed, by the late Mr. Henry, a basis. "
(from Oxford English Dict. I think he lost his battle, however.)
