Well, I'm frustrated by this one. That I can see there are
only two possible combinations with each having three known
letters. And I can't find a single legal word to fit the
patterns.

If this word ends up being something that's not in my dictionary
then Rane gets shot at dawn. It's that simple. ;-)

I'm stymied, too, 'cause I think there might be an error up there some
where, or else I'm confused. Even so, I'll try:

filth

because it might help clarify things.

That's the five allowed before the sponsor responds. I'll check in soon
to see if there are some more.

WOW! People sure are jumping in on this one. OK. Here's more data:

katie, have you stayed signed on all day ? ;-).

The word is in my Webster's New World (College), but not in a Random
House (College) or a Funk and Wagnalls New Practical Standard. The
word has a funny looking star in front of it. Hmmm..what does that mean
(pause)......the star means "Americanism". That seems fair enough.

I knew a long time ago that this word was not in *my* vocabulary.
The problem is that it was also not in my *dictionary*.
That combination kinda took me out of the running.
So I had to go get a bigger dictionary.
If my Random House Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language
doesn't have it, then it must be *too new*.

But Wait... There is one word that fits.

"milpa" n. (in certain tropical regions) a tract of land cleared
from the jungle, usually by burning, farmed for a few seasons, and
then abandoned. [From Mexican Spanish, From Nahuatl, a variation
of the phrase "milli pa" in cultivation]

I'm not sure this qualifies as an Americanism, though. So I'll
just hope for the best, ignoring the hint.

milpa has got to be it. The word must fit into _ilp_.
But I sure would like to think we could all play this game
without needing multiple dictionaries. ;-)

Well, if I win, I am already thinking of the next 5 letter word.
So you may proceed to ask about mine as soon as rcurl announces that.
My word will be a word that should not require a dictionary to know
(but of course I cannot be certain of everyone's vocabulary).

On the other hand if milpa is not it, then I don't like to think about
the consequences. We will have to isolate the first and last letter
until we have the 5-letter sequence.

I'm in agreement Mary. I'd rather play without a dictionary, but I
keep one handy for when I run out of ideas. Now it's a much bigger
one than before.

milpa 5 srw

We have a milpa in our back yard - never did get the garden in this
year. Pulled the thistles, but the rest is rank.

Steve, did you get the unabridged just because of Letter.Match? You've
upped the ante: I better start doing the garage sales again.....

milpa (25) beat the previous record of gauge (23) for requiring the most
guesses.

Go to it Steve. I'll let you blow the starting gun.

Well, no I didn't go and *buy* the dictionary just because of
letter.match (although I considered letting you think so for a while).
I just had to go find it and dust it off. It's so darned heavy
I almost never use it anymore. I'm keeping it near the modem now.

OK I'm thinking of a 5-letter word. This word is going to appear
even in *abridged* dictionaries. My guess is that it's also in
most people's usage vocabularies, but no promises there :-)
