Towards the end of the month, March 28th, I think (but double-check if
you plan to attend..) the Skatalites will be appearing at the Majestic
Theater in Detroit. It's not my favorite concert venue but for one reason
or another it seems to be the place in SE Michigan that books ska acts so..
Anyway, the Skatalites, for those who are not familiar with them, are a
bona fide piece of music history. Their sound dominated the early ska
scene and immeasurably influenced the development of later Jamaican music
forms including rock steady, bluebeat, reggae, and dub.
That's not, however, the reason you should see them -- by far a better
reason to go is that even in their sixties these guys put on a rocking
good show unlikely to be matched by anything else you'll see this year.
Wear comfy shoes and be prepared to dance to the incredibly infectious
beat while you discover the work of these influential musical pioneers.

It's not what I'd call a "concert", but driving to/from work on Hines Drive
I see banners for a "PolkaFest", to be held this weekend, Sa-Su July 11-12,
at the "Warrendale" section of Hines Park, which is "northwest" from the Outer
Drive intersection of Hines Drive, in what I assume is either Dearborn or
Dearborn Heights.

On August 23 the Magnetic Fields are scheduled to play a set at
the Magic Stick (above the Majestic on Woodward in Detroit..)
Tickets are only $6 if my info is correct..
I first encountered the Magnetic Fields last summer when I saw
them open for Yo La Tengo -- I was impressed enough to buy two
of their albums at the concert and several more shortly thereafter.
Their music won't appeal to everyone but if you have any affinity
for the "depressing songwriter" genre they're worth checking out..

from Detroit, Treblehead. West Park band shell by the Seventh street entrance
to the park between Huron and Miller. The early weather forecast for Saturday
looks good.

This seems like a more ambitious schedule (bigger names) than I've seen in
the past.

Not really. I`ve played 3 gigs there before and was already asked to open
the season this year well before I was asked to sign bands. I decided to
have a bigger name open the season, tho.

future year..

This week at the Ark:
Wednesday, july 28: Adrian Belew
Thursday, July 29: Aimee Mann
Wow, I'm actually going to (try) to go to two consecutive nights at the Ark!
Even more amazing is that it has been years since I went there, and that was
the old location.

It's a neat venue, now, though many miss the ambience of the old Ark.
I do not. I think the old bathrooms sucked and so did the prevalence of
cigarette smoke around the concession area. Now, at least, I don't get
an asthma attack just by serving people popcorn.
Saturday night -- Mustards' Retreat 25th anniversary show. With special
guest (I know but I'm sworn to secrecy.)

She is quite a talent who is being quite ignored by the music industry..when
she visited our studio back in Nov(?) for a taping of Acoutic Cafe she was
without a record label.

She did most (all?) of the music on the "Magnolia" soundtrack,
which I was listening to in SKR the other day. It sounded pretty
good, and I think I'd probably enjoy one of her albums, although
preferably one without Three Dog Night covers.. What's a good
starting place?
