Further to #622. I have now calculated the 99% confidence interval for
the estimated mean guesses to the first "hit". The mean is 3.67 and the
99% CI is [1.85, 5.49]. Therefore the mean differs significantly from
the expected value of 5.62, for totally random targets and guesses.
This now makes sense, since the targets and guesses are not random letter
sequences from the alphabet: spelling considerably constrains the choices.
I therefore calculated *what size alphabet* would give the observed mean,
if target and guesses were totally random sequences. To the nearest
integer, it is 16. I see now way to refine this analysis further, since
spelling rules (and language) have large arbitrary components.

Yep, fraid I didn't wait between ninth and canal. Sometimes I just
get too excited for my own good.

I picked fanon up from a crossword clue, which was "manicle". How
did you pick up fanon, chelsea? There were still a lot of other
possibilities (like...uh...er...can anyone think of any?).
Your turn!

It was all I could come up with. Karma intervened.

One of these games someone really should start a new item as this one
takes one mighty long time to ld and life is short, afterall.

I'm thinking of a five letter word.

I've noticed that the earlier guesses appear to be linked by a
form of free association. So be very careful here.

(What is "ld"? Since I am a player, I know where each new game starts.
What problem does the length of this item have for anyone else? A new
person need only ctrl-C, and look back from the end. I have also been
posting each new game to announcements. Also, I was hoping to hit
1000, before restarting ;->.)
