On the iPod-for-audiophiles question: the iPod Classic is a Class D
Recommended Component in Stereophile magazine's list.
Class D means that there are some compromises to keep costs down to
where normal humans can afford the gear. (Most of
what is in Class A / Class A+ is priced between $2000-$10,000.)

#61 Makes sense. If there was a SPDIF out, it could have been a great
component. Or better yet, if it had a decent onboard DAC...
I do have a portable DAC that I can plug into my phone (digital/USB
connection, not line out) and it sounds great but on most days it's not
worth the effort to set things like that up (even though I can fit it
in my pocket.) Most of the time I'm using $10 earbuds in my phone. The
horror! My S5 does have great sound and there are multiple file
formats, streaming and different players with onboard EQs where it's so
convenient that I'm completely satisfied.

I'm curious how many of you collected your free U2 album.
(I did.)
I'm curious if there is any reaction to it.
(Haven't played it yet, been too much into classical and folk and
1970 rock this week.)

I downloaded it on my ipad but didn't get around to listen to it.
I was into U2 in my late teens-early 20's and lost interest so it's
been half a lifetime ago since I went out of my way to listen to them.
I'll get around to it.
I am curious that I have't heard *anything* about it other than some
people were angry to get something for free that they don't even have
to download and if they did takes seconds to delete! That was my run-on
sentence for the week.

My son put the Miracle Ramone song on in the car through the Aux input..
..it was kind of like listening to Bonham (Led Zep wanna-be) music.
They've become a coverband of themselves...like they're trying to sound
like Coldplay trying to sound like U2.

I'll check out mania d. Looks interesting.
I never got into Muse. Shannon was a fan. I checked out their last
record and it put me to sleep. It was like the same bad slow song over
and over. I'm beginning to sour on music again. Might be time to jump
into jazz again. Either that or I'm gassy and am having a bad day.

Two classical concerts noted without much intelligent comment:
University Philharmonia Orchestra, at Hill Auditorium:
Weber/intro to Turandot (a stage version, predating the Puccini opera).
Bizet / L'Arlesienne suite #2.
Tchaikovsky / Symphony #2.
The theme for the evening was folklore melodies, I think.
The Chinese themes in the Weber "Turandot"
were fake; the Provencal folk themes in the Bizet, and the Ukranian
folk themes in the Tchaikovsky, were reported as genuine in the
program notes.
---
U-Michigan faculty concert, viola and harpsichord, at Stamps Auditorium.
3 JS Bach sonatas (originally for viola de gamba)
and then a student ensemble joined them for Brandenburg Concerto #6.
The sonatas were a bit sleepy, the Brandenburg was exhilarating.
This was my introduction to Edward Parmentier's replacement as the
U-Michigan's harpsichord teacher. Mr. Parmentier retired in
spring 2014.
This was also the first event I'd gotten to in the new Walgreen
Drama Center, the big green cube with no parking on North Campus.
The Stamps Auditorium seems nice, though the sound seemed a little
thin in the two-instrument sonatas. It reminded me of the auditorium
in Aspen that the music school uses.

Hung out with Trae Pierce and the T Stone Crew at BB King's in Orlando.
My colleague and I totally snuck in through the back and the band rolled
out the carpet. It was surreal. Great great band..fun fun..

The Metropolitan Opera's "HD Live" movie-theater presentation of "The
Marriage of Figaro" was excellent, one of the best of the series. I
suggest one catch the Wednesday repeat (that's tomorrow) if one has
any interest. Delightful singing and acting from all the leads,
delightful staging.
I need to write something about how opera-movies from Covent Garden
now appear to be contractually locked out of the USA due to the Met.
No time today, though.
