Ugh. Feel rather beat up today; maybe a cold coming on and magnifying minor
muscle aches.

Major bummer: my provider Wish has been gobbled up by Italian Internet
provider Tiscali. It forces me to make a new account and transfer my 9
Mb Homepage to the new location with a 56.6 k modem!
Hey, *they* are forcing me! I am not the one instigating this.
I'll have to arrange a new emailaddress, change all my HP links and all
my email registrations (I guess about 100, or so)
Yuch!

Grand Rapids, the Dominican Republic, and driving back to Ann Arbor...

i've deserted the people i usually hang out with. one of them has been talking
shit about me to cover up and protect anyone knowing what his best friend did
to me, and even though everyone knows this guy is an asshole, they don;t
really give a shit. it pretty much feels like shit because the 2 guys work
at the place where most of my friends hang out in the area. but at least i'm
not going out as much. .....
people never cease to amaze me.

Yeah. I remember one time this guy I used to date talked all kinds of
shit about me to other people. Since *some* of it was true, it made the
rest of his story credible. Anyhow, it really bothered me at the time
especially when people who were my friends started hearing all these
rumors about me.

IBB I don't know for sure whether my attempt to certify in rapier
actually worked or not (though my feeling is more toward the negative)
IABB the Renaissance Faire in Alpena, MI got called on account of rain
(and hail, and low temparture, and windchill, etc . . . ) Okay, that's
probably a good thing, my hands - the only part of my body suffering -
were freezing.

Jim's Pentium no longer does anything except make noise. Before that it would
not recognize a hard drive. Now it won't even put anything on the display.
He was going to change the hard drive and in the process changed the power
supply fan (that works better now) and cleaned the board off. It recognized
the old hard drive okay. He is wasting the day proving that all the
components are good - video, hard drive, cables, power supply, cpu.

button up their windows and turn on a noisy air-conditioner.

IBB I'll miss part of Game 7, being in the air and stuff. Does anyone know
what the current setup for Northwest flights is? Are they in the new
terminal? And most importantly, is there a TV there anywhere (preferably
accessible to non-ticket-holders) that'll be showing the game?

Okay, so class got out early, so I decided to come upstairs and check email
and grex.
Guess what happened? In about 10 minutes a beautiful sunny day became a
thunderstorm. grr.

my computer is giving me problems with communication. Uninstaled it and tried
to re-instll it adn it gets 95% loaded adn stops. Sometimes it says it is
unable to read a file, sometimes it just spins. Sometimes it says the version
needs to be upgraded, sometimes it says he version cannot be upgraded. Me
thinks it needs to be wiped or I need to upgrade to 2000.

Sounds like bad hardware or a virus to me. For the virus, boot with a
known secure OS from known good media. Do a low-level format. Only
then install your OS of choice. For hardware problems, run hardware
diagnostics, and check error logs. With older machines, it was possible
to boot dos from a floppy, run "debug", and format the hard drive by
jumping to some special location in the hard disk bios. I don't know if
this is still possible. I don't know of any "good" made for the purpose
hardware diagnostics. I have heard that "freebsd" makes a good hardware
diagnostic -- apparently it's good enough at logging to give useful
details, and good enough at exercising the hardware to bring problems
out. The freebsd installation process is likely also capable of doing a
low-level format, and also likely to be more resistant to a virus (or
fail in some spectacular and obvious fashion if it wasn't resistant.)

Bruce, what were you trying to install and uninstall? It might be
something as simple as an anti-virus program that you're running - I've often
seen Norton AntiVirus stomp all over an installation in the same way you
describe. If you're not re-installing Windows itself, I'd try disabling any
virus protection, and if the install still freezes then try removing the
CD-ROM you're using, wiping it to make sure it's clean, and putting it back
in.

IBB because I had to throw away thousands of $$ in mishandled dairy products
because my warnings about the need to check a unit for temperatur during the
day was blown off. I feel like Cassandra: Doomed to fortell the future and
never be listened to.
This is not one of those times where I can gleefully say that I told them so.

Scary stuff: Last night was the first time I've ever thought about suicide.
I've always been sooooo against that, but the thoughts were quite real. Ugh.
Luckily, I figured out a way to get through the icky period, and I'm doing
better today.

I discovered the other day just how very silly I am.
I was whining on the phone to a friend of mine about how depressed I was about
my life... and how I'm taking summer classes in order to graduate in 5 years
and that alone makes me such a loser... and then all of a sudden I yell into
the phone "YES! The red wings scored!" and I was really happy.
Then I felt really, really stupid and petty.

Actually, that's kinda cool, and it happens to all of us. I've been known
to joke and laugh in the middle of a crying fit. I think of it as my brain
initializing self-preservation.
