I think it's just an order thing, and a way to keep the person with
the word from being swamped with guesses. I'm not sure that there's a
continued need for the rule, but it really did make sense at the time.

But some of us only connect during certain times of the day and sometimes this
does not coincide with the current word owner having given counts.

Unlimited guesses give a less fair advantage to the first person to read
this just after the answers to 100 guesses ( 8^{ ) is posted. It serves to
smooth out the play for more participants. The particular number, 5, was
arbitrary. In the original version of this game, there are a fixed number
of players, and everyone took turns. That is not feasible here, so the
guesses limit was substituted. Many games have arbitrary numbers: 9
innings, 5 (or 7) cards, 2 dice, 1 ball, etc. This particular game is "6
Letter, 5 Guess, LetterMatch (tm)"; "5 Letter, 5 Guess" is played in
another item. If there is enough interest, additional versions could be
started, though at some risk of diluting the clientele.

Respecting the 5-guess limit, although I am not sure I agree with it, I stop
here

by the way, how do you access that file with all the previouw guesses?
I am not familiar with the commands on this system at all!!

I don't think orinoco has made one yet - it would be (if tradition is
followed) /u/orinoco/letter.match
asp
response 620 of 1032: Mark Unseen   Apr 18 21:01 UTC 1996

but given that name for the file, how do I read it? (I live in
fear of the day that I have to make one myself -- assuming I
guess right one of these days!)

You an read an earlier one, which I left in my directory, with the
command (entered at an Ok: prompt): !more /u/rcurl/letter.match
If you want to create such a file yourself, you can use the pico editor
with the command !pico letter.match (you don't need the path -
the /u/rcurl/ part, because it is your own directory).

I've been through the scores twice now, and each time I reach a contradiction.
orinoco, would you check them over? I think you may have made an error.

I have the same sense, but I have not been able to frame a specific
contradiction (allowing any letter combinations as a word).
