Good SCA event this weekend, even though it rained the whole time. My luck
with the ladies seems to be turning for the better.

We rescued a few abandoned bikes in really bad shape, all 26" mountain style
(I would call them parts rather than bikes considering one of them was missing
not only wheels and seat and brakes and pedals but even the part that the
handlebar attaches to, but not the handlebar). One of them (no seat or
pedals) had two aluminum wheels in reasonable shape (if you don't mind rusty
spokes on one) and they looked different sizes to me. The larger one is not
a 26" but a 700 mm which is what I needed for my bike. My tire was nearly
shot. Now we can build open-frame 26" dirt bikes for ourselves and for the
five friends of our neighbor who want them, two of whom are willing to trade
time sorting out our parts collection. The idea was to reduce the size of
the collection and we have gone in the opposite direction ;(
We also found a total of two aluminum wheels with missing bikes, which the
silly owners had locked with a kryptonite-style lock to three front spokes.
To remove the wheel you only need to undo the spokes but whoever took the
bikes did not bother. We did not get rained on, much.

little Disturbed on the jukebox and it was all good . . .

Jim is, after three hours, ALMOST done adding 2" rake to the purple front fork
of one bike (which was built without rake, he thinks by accident) so he can
use it to replace a similar but slightly different size green front fork which
is hopelessly bent out of shape. We will also move over the brake cables and
housing and saddle and tires, for an interesting 'hybrid' bike. We had a nice
visit with Aruba's non-power mower and Aruba and his bike brakes.

We saw both rainbows this evening while dodging raindrops, and the green bike
is mostly together except for the gears and brakes, the cables and housings
of which are rather in a mess and seem to have been installed wrong. We
discovered that some mountain bikes are rather far off the ground (12" to the
bottom bracket) which makes it impossible for me to climb on without standing
on something first, which is hardly convenient around town. Jim says they
are designed for going over logs and curbs, not for transportation. Jim is
currently, I think, trying to find some way to hang a recumbent bike on the
garage wall so that he does not keep tripping over it. This one is named
'Longbike' and Scott says it looks like a very early one - the steering is
via a 6' or so bar down the middle. Strange. There are many different
designs of brakes, all of which fail in different ways.

Mark has a non-power mower? Go Mark! (Although, that probably adds some
money to the amount you would expect to pay a neighborhood kid to mow your
lawn...)
My bike needs the back brake replaced. I'm not sure where to go or what to
do.. or how much to expect it to cost.

IHB I decided what to go back to college for.
This may sound silly, but I had decided that it wasn't worth going back
until I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Those were some amazing rainbows! And they went on for a long time. I took
some pictureswith the digital camera; I haven't looked at them yet to see
how they came out.
Re #562: It should cost under $10 to get a new brakepad for the back.

Heh, that was my reasoning for not wanting to go to college in the first
place. Unfortunately, it was the only way to get out of my parent's house.
I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. :) So I have 136
credits and still work in food service. Don't forget that $20,000 of debt.
Whew! that was worth it.

The brakepad (the little black rubber thing), if you have an older bike,
should be easy to replace with a small adjustable wrench. Just grab onto the
nut (thing with 6 sides) and turn, probably counterclockwise, until it comes
off. Put on the new black rubber brakepad in the same place as the old one
and tighten the nut again. I have not worked with newer brakes but Mark can
describe how to attach those as he did a perfect job with his rear brakes.
The older style pads (also available in pink) are probably about $2 each.
Draw a picture of what you have to bring to the bike store, or take off the
old one. If the brake pad looks okay but nothing moves when you squeeze the
brake lever, you may need a new cable, equally cheap. See how the old one
is attached and try to get the new one on the same way. You are likely to
need some way to cut it to length - some pliers have a cutting edge. If you
live in Ann Arbor and need help bike it over (carefully, using front brakes)
to Jim's garage. Email us first. The bike shop on William sold me a $2 cable
once and let me use their tools for half an hour (and the guy there took pity
on me and told me how to do it right). If you want to just bike over to Jim's
we have lots of used cables and pads already.

Steve Andre and I saw double partial rainbows for part of the drive
home Tuesday night, and then we had a complete rainbow for another
long section of the drive. This was mostly in Livingston County.
And I saw the cresent moon near some bright planet last night.
I can't keep track of which planet is where any more.
My periodontal cleaning went well, things aren't getting any worse
with my gums.
