Re 49 - I have been the judge, randall, but this bickering is
getting us nowhere.

Sorry to everyone who thinks I insulted them by referring to Gen-Xers,
I use the term to refer to a particular subset of the post-Baby Boom
Generation. I apologize for any confusion. That said, I still
think Kurt was important to that subset.

This disrespect for anyone dead
is somewhat offensive to me. I
am just as sad about this death
than about any other.

death happens. why the hurry, though.

I concur, bickering is useless (Though it can be fun at times), and
I apologize to anyone I offended. I can be rather unkind at times
. Sorry.

I don't think anyone is necessarily disrespecting the dead, I think that most
people (including me) think that what he did was stupid. And as far as being a
voice to us in the so-called GenX, I personally can think of alot of other
people I'd much rather call a voice of the times than Kurt Cobain! He rode a
short-lived fame...I doubt in 10-15 years people will really remember him with
great pride!

re:41...should we really _thank_ the likes of Kurt for starting grunge??
As I fellow dj recently stated, "Isn't grunge just a new name for what we
used to call off-key and in need of a bath?"
power
response 58 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 12 17:43 UTC 1994

Actually, grunge is more a reworking of 70's metal-type-stuff... I rather
like it myself. I think it quite possible that Cobain will be remembered
10-15 years down the line, if only because of his rather tragic death...
We remember Ritchie Valens, Hendrix, etc, which we might or might not do if
they had not died early. Comparison with Lennon probably is unwarraranted,
but not necessarily because of a gap in musical ability/whatever--Lennon had
just been around longer, and with the Beatles, long held a grasp on a big
part of American culture....

Of course, I expect that around the time that Lennon died, people were
questioning the value of his music... but oh well..

Ok, here's one for ya Russ, Would Buddy Holly have been more or less
popular than Elvis, had Holly lived? (sorry for the drift)

#58: The Beatles were more prolific than Nirvana. The Beatles will live
forever; Nirvana's longevity is not yet known.

power
response 65 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 05:52 UTC 1994

The Beatles were definitely much more prolific than Nirvana... Nirvana
may or may not continue in their popularity, although a dramatic death
such as Cobain's certainly isn't going to hurt....
As for Buddy Holly, and comparison's with Elvis, I don't know enough
about that era of music to answer very reliably... Elvis had a somewhat
interesting death himself (I mean, an interesting faked death, since he's
still alive and living in the Kalamazoo Burger King)....
Re: 63... I have to say, I find your attitude rather disturbing... whether
or not you liked Nirvana, someone's suicide is not something to rejoice over.
I rather liked Nirvana myself, and think that rejection of almost ANY kind
of music indicates close-mindedness and refusal to take a serious listen to
it (although I admit that I myself am not a big fan of country and over-
synthed 96.3 type stuff, mainly because it seems somehow overdone to me...
Nonetheless, I am not rejoicing over the suicides of country stars/whoever).

response 66 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 07:05 UTC 1994

re #58. Reality check. Valens died in a plane crash, and Hendrix... well...
he was HENDRIX, all comparisons fail. It's like Bill Mahr said (referring to
the death of River Phoenix) "... we have to decide the difference between what
is tragic, what is sad, and what is just stupid." Valens death was tragic,
Hendrix's was sad (he was... genius), and Cobain's, I'm sorry to say, was just
stupid. I feel little sympathy for suicides. There's got to be another way.

Re #66: The reason I feel compassion when I hear that a person committed
suicide is that I realize that person must have been in a lot of pain to
take that way out. And great pain, in my opinion, is not to be laughed at
or dismissed. For most people who kill themselves, you are correct, randall,
there is a better way out. But they can't see that, and that is sad, not
stupid.
kimba
response 69 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 17:58 UTC 1994

It is sad that people can't learn to accept themselves and the things life is
offering them (good or bad), however, it is stupid to kill yourself,
especcially when you have a spouse and child. It's a selfish act by a selfish
person. I don't criticize people for having the thought, I believe most people
have, I only criticize the people who are foolish enough to not be able to get
help either from yourself or someone else.

Re # 66: I agree 100%...tragic, sad & stupid...this one was stupid!
jimbob
response 70 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 21:19 UTC 1994

i think that suiside is the most stupidist thing that has ever been
concived in the minds of humans...suicide is like saying "Hi, i want
attention please like me after i'm dead"...it's just stupid altogether,
and although i feel remorse for him it's still stupid and i have little
respect for him now...Kurt wasn't some big stupid guy wandering around
making millions...he was some big stupid troubled guy wandering around
making millions...but even if his mom had sex with sailors in front of
him, suicide still isn't the answer...it's just stupid...(gee now i feel
stupid)

response 71 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 22:23 UTC 1994

your right. About 2 years ago, i my self was very suicidal. I can tell
you my rational behind it. I felt i would be "more" popular dead. Sounds,
crazy, right? It is. But curt must of been really phukked. I had not
phriends, and was, as i felt at the time, very insignifigant. Yet he
was married, had a kid, and a great band. Go phiggure. I guess peple all
have there own rational for suicide, and not enven in my case, caould it
be justified by a sain person. I wnanted to end my life at the age of 14...
.....go figure....I have seen the pictures of him dead...with his head
kinda of not attached...and it scares me...i wanted to do that to myself....
if you have never been suicidal, or even depressed, you really kant understand
fully. I i hope , for god, you never have the privilage.

response 72 of 134: Mark Unseen   Apr 13 23:34 UTC 1994

One more time: People don't commit suicide on awhim, because they're
bored. They do it because life is very painful, and they don't see how
it's going to get better, or they don't believe they're strong enough
to survive the bad part. A selfish act it is, absolutely. But not a
"stupid" one. Stupid is shoplifting from a convenience store; suicide
is sad.
