Finally someone who sees the danger to Grex.
You can't be descent enough to get rid of it, but
at least SOMEONE can follow the arguement towards
it's potential danger to Grex.

I have been trying to figure out what to do about this item, too.
I can never remember a more harmful item being posted here, although there
are some whose memories go back further than mine. I read the first
few lines and none of the rest of what is obviously private stuff
(of dubious origin) inappropriately made public.
At this point I am willing to assume that anyone quoted there was
being impersonated by someone else, and strongly encourage anyone
who might have read the item in full to ignore it. I value bhelliom,
gerund, and sun's contributions to Grex, and would hate to see them leave.
I wouldn't favor killing this item to please them, or anyone else, but
I certainly do favor this item, because of its inappropriate exposure
of private conversations.
Mary and STeve's advices are good, but I think that there's ample reason
to go further.

I'm not for killing this item. As for anyone's reputation, everyone can
rest easier when dealing with older people (usually). I have six children
who at one time or another (especially in Jr. high and high school) have had
ugly things said about them. In our small town, we usually see the people
again so no one can hide, quit or run away. Taht is the nature of a
community, there are all kinds. So, what to do. Go about your business
knowing that this kind of thing is nothing new. Sweeping it under the rug
is impossible and hurtful. At least on Grex it can be hashed out and
possibly resolved. Where else can you have this opportunity?
Another issue here is the raunchy conversation which I have seen in party.
I work at a couple of schools which have modems and students who could
be introduced to the internet and Grex. I hate to get on and have to deal
with it. Some people have tried to re considerate by letting folks know
I am on with 6th graders so the conversation can be altered. I just don't
see why it has to go on at all. But that is life so I try to explain to
the kids there are some weird people (to me, but they love it, the more
outrageous the better). Kindly take it to another channel next time and
don't believe anything anyone says.

There's reason, IMO, to get further advice (say, from a lawyer) on the
general policy issue of Grex's liability/risk when such items as this
are entered. I think they will continue to be entered, and that's why
I suggested we talk about the issue in coop. As long as Grex's fws
feel that nothing should be censored even if it is slanderous, the best
that we as users can do is look the other way (forget the item) and that's
why I suggested that course. I, as several people also noted, had no
desire to read past the first few lines, at which point it was obvious
this was a private squabble that had become public. The policy issue
of Grex's actions in such cases remains. I hope it doesn't take a
lawsuit to get the board to wake up to this.

I don't think there is anyone on the board or staff who isn't
aware of the potential pitfalls with things, Kent.
Hell, trashing people in an item is *nothing* compared to what
could happen to us if email were really improperly used.
The real question is, how scared do we want to get over the
potential legal issues? *We're on the fronteer folks*. I could
get laywers to talk to us (for a lot of money) who would *CRINGE*
at the thought of a system as open as us.
It all boils down to trust, people. If we start worrying about
what might happen to us, we'd better start an item in coop about
how to shut Grex down.

I don't mean that.
I love Grex.
It's brought me to knowing the best people in the whole world.
These people have had a major impact on my life, and as bad as
things are going for me right now, I'd like to think that
Grex had a part in the good in my life as well as the bad.
I'm seriously worried that something far more dangerous
to Grex will occur. I'm afraid I don't have
any answers for it.
I don't want Grex to go away.
I love Grex.
I just feel Grex has made a mistkae and some people are hurt.
I hope Grex can recover from it.

Having read the entirety of #0, and being none the wiser for it, I feel no
differently about any of the people involved than I did before. In truth, I
am at a loss to even make sense out of what I *did* read.
One of the key elements of cyberspace, and Grex in particular, is that
it is a transient world of variable reality. Anything one finds within its
borders cannot be perceived as truth with the certainty of experience. I think
it would be a tremendous loss to the Grex community to have one brief spurt
of bad electrons cause the withdrawal from our community of some of its more
vital and contributive components.
I respectfully request that those involved let this storm pass, as they
all do, and don't let your feelings, strong as they may be, deprive the rest
of us of your valuable input.
Thank you!

if it doesn't always show it.

I hope gerund & bhelliom & sun & everybody else stick around too.
Unlike 'other', I chose not to read #0 when it started scrolling by
and I saw what kind of an item it was. If I had read it, I doubt
it would have changed my feelings about anybody. I think that the
person that this item hurts is 'seraph', whoever that is.

So, this will stay then? Yes, it hurt seraph.. if he evr shows again,
I'm certain he will get a very COLD reception. BUT, I know *I* wouldn't want
to stick around a board that had something that was this hurtful to *me*,
and refused to kill it!
This may sound flip, but I'm SERIOUS when I say, regarding the hypo-
thetical situation of this happening to me, that,"I don't have to stay here
and get treated like this.. I can go anywhere and get treated poorly."
That's not why *I* log on.. and I seriously doubt that is why any of
the people this item hurts log on. I log on to talk with my friends, and
discuss things CIVILLY in the cf's.. and I am willing to bet that is what
they are here for too..
THIS is why I am still for killing the item.. I despise Political
Correctness, *but*, there should be limits to how inconsiderate one may
*be* here,
until one's item gets trashed. I'm not even calling for deleting seraph's
account <although it sounds nice>, for THAT would be true censorship. I am
simply for removing *toxic waste* from our environment, if you will.

Absolutely what remmers said. I let #0 (and most of the responses)
scroll past my unfocused eyes in a pleasant haze of ASCII, and when
I finally figured out what had happened it seemed to me that the
author of #0 is the one who got caught with his dick hanging out.
On the other hand, I've been known to kill items like this one if
I felt like it, and I wouldn't fault anyone who killed or retired
this one. Grex is terminally free-speechish, however, so don't
hold your breath. (Sing the "Every sperm is sacred" song from
"Monty Python's Meaning of Life" and substitute "item" for "sperm,"
and you have a good idea of the prevailing culture here, as they say.

I mailed staff with my final feelings about this policy.
I can't agree with it, but I can honestly offer nothing better.
I hope, in time, a dialogue about the issue will end in
a policy everyone can be comfortable with.

Well, it's better than lots of things. I'm a middle-of-the-roader.
I don't think letting this item stand is anywhere near as damaging
to anyone as the folks who want it killed believe, and I don't think
that killing it would be a much greater crime than flicking a bug
off your sleeve.

Not to belittle your emotional damage, but I'd really like to know why
you consider this damaging. There are hardly any damaging allegations
in the item text, other than perhaps gerund has a small dick, or that
bhelliom will sleep with anyone. Half the people who are complaining
that they were emotionally damaged aren't even mentioned by name in
the item text. To tell you the truth, I think it would all have blown
over if you hadn't made such a big deal about it.
