How much does a tape cost?

"archive" as I understand it, is a highlight conf, where only those
particularly meritorious items are linked. So it serves a different
purpose than a storage conf would.

We've got a lot more disk space than we did on the Sun3, so I don't think it
would be a problem to do such a thing.

Any volunteers to FW it? I think we'd have to settle on requesting links,
rather than giving everybody else the Power.

I think maybe the current "archive" conf could simply be expanded...in
its present form, I dont think "archive" serves much use. Most folks
dont even know its there. So changing the purpose and scope of
archive, keeping the same fw's, wouldnt hurt anything. It would work
better if all fw's could simply link into it. I dont know why this
isnt technically possible? explanations? Maybe a root should be fw
who could do this anyway?

response 54 of 115: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 02:21 UTC 1996

Well, in order to do that, you'd have to make every fw also the fw of
archive, and that would require keeping track of who is a current fw, and
whether or not they are still active, and remember to remove them from the
archive when they leave. It's possible, but hard. I doubt staff has time
to maintain such a list. However, it wouldn't be hard to have a few fws who
can be requested. Also, we should probably ask popcorn if she wants to do
something like that, which would take a fiar amount of time, before we
volenteer her.

well maybe the largest confs could be identified and those fw's could be
given fw status in archive for linking purposes...

Which is certainly possible. I'd personally like to see the current archive
conference remain a "Best Of", and add a storage conference. Also, if there
is a seperate FW for a storage conf, items linked can't be killed by a rogue
FW. And regular users could request links instead of relying on a local FW.

Heh. Heheheheh. That would give me power over the Archive cf.
*cackles manically*
Sure you wanna do that, Richard? 8^)
(seriously, guys, you cantrust me, I'm just kidding)

I'd prefer to see a handful of Archive-specific FWs.
kerouac
response 58 of 115: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 23:26 UTC 1996

most confs have two or three fw's, just have one designated from each
as a storage-specific fw...

response 59 of 115: Mark Unseen   Apr 7 00:01 UTC 1996

It's not the logistics of many FWs that I'm worried about. I'd think that
if we are worried about FWs killing items and those items being gone forever,
then the less people that can kill items in the storage conf. the better.
Suppose an FW has a grudge against a user, and starts killing all items by
that user? That FW could also kill them out of the storage conf. I'm not
really *that* worried, but if we have to make a decision, then I'd say have
specifc FW(s) for a storage conf.

response 60 of 115: Mark Unseen   Apr 7 00:13 UTC 1996

This cant be setup so that only the actual fw of storage could
kill items, but other fw's could link only?

response 61 of 115: Mark Unseen   Apr 7 03:05 UTC 1996

I don't know. I think it would be unlikely that there would be a setting for
that.

If people aren't scared that I'm a megalomaniac, I'd be willing to fair
witness the storage conference.

Having a storage conference is fine with me, and I think nephi would be a fine
fair witness of it.

I do like the archive conference the way it is; I'd like to keep it that way
and have the storage conference created as a separate conference.

Speaking of putting old Grex history on-line, I recently got hold of copies
of all old agoras (except agora7). At some point, people were talking about
putting read-only versions of all the old agoras on-line, once we moved to
the Sun 4 and had more disk space to put them in. Well, we are on the Sun
4 now. I'd be interested in uploading all the old agoras, and also trying
to locate the old agora 7 conference. I'll enter an item to talk about
this....

I trust Nephi. I like the idea. I don't like the concept of one
FW from each of the major confs. If there's one readily identified
FW of storage, it's just as easy for FWs to mail him and ask that
items that are about to die be linked...
To link, FWs have to go into the target conf, and I have no motivation
for adding that conf except to do such linking... I'd rather not
be obliged to bother, frankly.

If anyone ever bothered to check their FUCKING facts before posting,
they'll note that Sexuality isn't GONE, dammit! It's items are retired,
and stored perfectly preserved in Sexuality II. SO DROP IT ALRREADY! I
Was *very VERY* fucking careful NOT to hurt a single one of those
preciuos items, and I REALLY resent the hell out of all you nuts who keep
saying I DESTROYED the damn thing!!!! If you were REALLY so goddamn
worried, try using browse retired somtime. Morons.

Um, Selena, nobody *keeps* saying you destroyed the items. There's even an
apology from me up there.

*winks at carson and nods to Popcorn*
She's got a bit of the Banshee spirit in her, yes. that doesn't give
Carson the right to be sarcastic... Of course, the First Amendment
gives him the right to be sarcastic, and it gives me tehe right
to be irritated... but that would be silly, that whole argumentation.
I sure think Selena's (and my and Valerie's) quicksilver tempers
are a refreshing change from the normal stoic repression
too many people around here suffer from.  =}
