The following software has been installed (by me) over the past two
days:
* tcp wrappers
* BIND
* shadow passwd subsystem
* sendmail
* newuser
* wuarchive ftpd
* taylor uucp
There are a few remaining issues to be dealt with before the system can
"go live", and a large number of software packages that are not
critical, but should probably be built before we move over to the Sun-4.
Unfortunately (for you folks, that is) I am returning to my cave in
Pittsburgh on Sunday, very likely never to return until winter break
starts around Dec. 20.
If the progress made between Sept. 1 and Nov. 21 is any indication,
I think it's very unlikely that anything will happen with the Sun-4
until I get back, and can finish the rest of the work. I'd love to
be proven wrong, though. If nothing more has been done by mid-December,
I'm not sure whether I will finish the work myself, or just give up
and find another hobby...

I have written the kernel blocks. I had them done yesterday, but crashed
before I had a chance to post this. I think we are closer than Marc makes it
out. A lot of scripts need to be copied over, but the bulk of the programs
that require recompilation are done. Admittedly, some are still left.
As in all things some staffers have been better than others at this. I
appreciate Marc's efforts when he can make them, but wish there were more
staff time available to do some of these things. For that matter, I wish I
had more time to work on this system. Staffers: let's not snipe at each other,
but rather just work together with what time we can afford to get the system
ready.

Ummm any progress? Ofcourse thanks to staff for everything they've
done, it's just I'm getting tired of glacial Grex.

Things progress - the new mail quota software here is essentially a
by-product of the sun-4 work - it's here so that it can be tested in
advance of switching things over to the sun-4.

We've run into a snag with the Ann Arbor Historical society. Since Grex
has always used old equipment, and now that we're located in a building
designated as a historical landmark, they've decided to also designate
Grex as a historical landmark. Therefore, we can only upgrade grex with
apporved antique handware. The sun-4 is too new and we've been told we
have to wait for it to age sufficiently.

Isn't it the Historic District Commission, or something like that, which can
make decisions like that. I don't think the Historical Society has any legal
authority.

The kernel blocks are about to get installed. Picospan is in the wings,
and then the machine will move to the dungeon for some heavier testing.

The number of things to be done keeps diminishing. Staff is dicussing now the
issue of how much testing must be completed before moving the machine. There
are still some mission-critical pieces that must be finished, but just a few.

Heh. That list is definitely smaller. Marc Unangst did some
wonderful detecttive work the other night, and discovered the
source of one of the problems we were having, after having applied
a 'patch' from Sun to the system. Thanks to Marc's work, the most
serious block from proceeding has been fixed.
Thank you, Marc.

It still needs a kernel rebuild, stress testing, security testing,
scripts need updating for changed locations of some directories, and
lots of last minute checkout. There's probably stuff I forgot, but we are
closer. STeve's right. We passed a major hump there.

If there's a stage between "staff testing" and "production" modes for the
new machine, I volunteer to go in and see how well things work (or how
easily I can get them to break and find them missing).
