It's different in the context of conferences because the term doesn't
blare out at you, as it would in large type on the front page of a
newsletter.
If you want a name that has an association with Grex conferencing
and that the world would ask about, I'd suggest "Respond or Pass".

But Greg, think about it: _The Fairwitness_ might sound stodgy, but
it sure wouldn't be... Think of all the people who might open it because
of its title... heh heh.

Yes, right. You think about it. All the people who might open it because
of it's title, expecting some fundementalist rag, and then finding out it's
not what they expected and tossing it. OTOH, all the people that we would
really want to open it, would take one look at the title and never even
bother opening it. Your argument doesn't hold water Steve.
It would be like naming a bar the "Teetotalers Juice Emporium". The non-
drinkers would come in, see that it wasn't what was advertised, and leave.
The crowd that you would want to attract, the drinkers, would never even come
in to start with.

I expect "The Fairwitness" would only be preaching to the
(digitally) converted.

Think "Respond or Pass". You won't be sorry that you did.

As no one else seems to have, I will. I think "Respond or Pass"
would be intriguing enough to attract non-Grexers, and familiar enuf
to Grexers that they won't feel that it is aimed only at outsiders.

I like "Respond or Pass," as well. I also think that a subtitle along
the lines of ajax's "Monthly Proceedings of the Grand Encampment of
the Ancient and Accepted Rito of the Siblinghood fo Supreme Purple
(purple?) Grexxers" would be pretty neat. Maybe we could even have
a different, witty subtitle along these lines each month.
Eh?

Hmm...I like that...runner up to Drift for me though :).
How about Breakfast Food of Champions?
Btw, is anyone slated to edit and publish this thing, or is it still
kind of hypothetical?

I don't really think that the people who will read it will be that
influenced by the title. Sure, the title will change the minds of a
few, either way, but I'm not concerned with that. It would happen
regardless of what we chose.

The answer to #58, mentioned in Item 66, is that bartlett volunteered
to put out the initial issues, and even posted an outline for the
newsletter. However bartlett hasn't logged in since ca. 26 January.
I've been keeping the pot simmering, but we do need to move ahead. Does
anyone know bartlett's whereabouts? Are there any new volunteers to take
on the editorship?
remmers, would the voting program be useable for first narrowing our list
of 10 suggested names - and then choosing from among (say) the top 4?

(Say, what does "breakfast of champions" mean w.r.t Grex? I suppose
its a Wheaties trade-mark, but I've never heard what it has to do with
us.)

Re #60: Sure, the voting program could be used. The board election
program is set up to let you vote for M out of N.

Re 62: Marcus entered the original "Breakfast of Champions" message,
intending for it to change every week or so. But the message has been
there for almost 4 years, and it hasn't changed yet (except to sometimes
say "Champs" instead of "Champions").

Actually, while "Whole Cyberspace Review" sounds like, and is based on,
"Whole Earth Review", it is not the same 3 words and therefore shouldn't
be a problem. Tradmark registration is for a very specific word or
phrase. If another film company wanted to call themselves "Kofak", Kodak
can't go after them just because their name *sounds* like Kodak.
Using the word "Wheaties" in the name would be a problem, because "Wheaties"
by itself is not a real word and has been trademarked. However, the words
"whole", "review", and "cyberspace" are real English words in and of
themselves and therefore I don't believe they can be made trademarks.
(Although "cyberspace" is rather new as a word.) Only the *phrase*
"Whole Earth Review" could be trademarked.

Wait. Whole Earth is public domain.
Why don't you email ruth@well.com
she is the editor of WER and ask her if you can use it?
