All I want to know is are you interested, can you use it, is the price a
acceptable if it is useable by you, and when do you want to pick it up?

I intended to ask that question as well, today.
If Grex is interested, please make arrangements to come and get the
thing to give it a try. The details are not that hard to work out.
If Grex is not interested, please let us know so we can seek another
buyer.
Today it is 1 month since Bruce posted our offer, and about 6 months
since I first contacted STeve about it. There have been over 50 responses
to this item, and 2 offers from users to put up money to buy the UPS if it
works.
The Arbornet Board meeting is Sunday, June 18 (less than a week
away). I am ready to consider a lack of response as a conclusive
response, and seek other buyers through Usenet News, if we haven't received
a request for pick-up by the Board meeting.

I pestered STeve. He says that since we've got the money for the UPS
we should tell jep we'll go ahead and buy it (unless the UPS doesn't
power on, or something like that). STeve's life is crazy right now,
but he thinks he'll have more free time around Thursday.
I sure wished we had Grex on a UPS yesterday evening when power was
fluctuating on and off and up and down all over the place. :(

We've now received $150 toward the purchase of the UPS. A crisp $100
bill arrived in the mail a couple days ago. :)

I got Valerie's mail this morning. I will hold on to the UPS, and if
I don't talk to STeve before, I'll talk to him at the JCC Sale.

Thanks a bunch to those who contributed to make it possible.

Well, we have the UPS in the dungeon now. Currently, it doesn't
work--it probably needs something kicked to get it started again.
Right now, the batteries are depleted, and it just sits there when
the power is applied.
We're going to look at it some more, when we have the time
to do it right, and we haven't done things like dealt with water
problems that day. ;-)

This may have been answered elsewhere, but what is the current status on
the UPS? If it gets returned, 900VA BackUPS from APC are going for under
$350 new (I think the broken UPS Grex has is 900VA)...wouldn't supply power
for very long, but the power outages in Ann Arbor generally don't last all
that long either (at least where I live).

It's sitting there in the Dungeon, absorbing heat. ;-)
I sent a letter to jep@arbornet.org to see if they'd come
up with any ideas. I think staff would like to buy it at
a really low price, with the thought that at that low price
it makes some sense to try fixing it. If it can't be, then
it's still useful for parts and I'm sure one of us would buy
it for that from Grex.

It's actually a 1000VA unit, and if Grex were going to buy one new, I would
think we would want to get something a bit larger (say, 1.5KVA) so we could
actually run all of Grex. (1KVA is enough to run the 3/260, but nothing
else.)

Re #67 - you mean, if you run power *into* the that UPS it cools the room?
Cool! That aside (:>), a 1.5KVA unit costs ca. $600....not trivial, but
apparently a cost of doing business in Ann Arbor - and the dungeon.

Heh. I touched it the other day, and it was warm. I figure,
anything that massive thats gotten warm by sitting there in the
Dungeon would have to make the room a little cooler, once its
outa there. ;-)
Yes, Marc is right. Actually about 2.5KVA, if we want to think
about running two systems, the 4/260 as Grex and a 3/260 as a news
system at the same time.
The *good* news, folks, is that this will be the most power Grex
shall ever use, the above configuration of two machines. The next
platform we get, whatever CPU it sports, will be >>much<< less
demanding on power!

STeve or Greg or someone had mentioned the figure of $50. Given that
the thing needs some work, Arbornet would accept that offer. Also, we
extended the 30 day trial period to 60 days. I hope this is reasonable.
I'm pretty bummed that the UPS didn't work.

So we should drop it to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean and come back in
85 years to see if it can be fixed? :-)
