Regular expressions define the same class of languages as can be
recognized by finite memoryless automata.

Has the utility of this item to any "party" discussions been completely
eradicated ?  Just wondering...  :-)

        I'm not at all displeased with the function of party, as it stands now.
Certainly, upgrades in Versions are not looked down upon, but other changes
_I_ at least, do not see the need for.

Thanks, popcorn. A new command. I wish there was one called "spy"
so I could look but not be "present" - sorta like "staff privileges,
I guess? Just got back from a visit to planet Arbornet and was
only on system for a few minutes when I got a "Welcome!" from the
staff (ec), or maybe it was just a user checking who was on. Just
kidding - Arbornet was a good experience, and the patience of
all you Grexers in teaching me paid off. I made mistakes, but
not so egregious this time. This should be someplace else,
I suppose, so sorry about that.

fine place, and thankxxx. Acknowledgement is encouragement.

response 64 of 111: Mark Unseen   Apr 15 00:59 UTC 1995

No problemo, tsty. BTW, I think ec (among many others) is
a "good guy" from the planet Arbornet. It sure is a different
world over there, but they do have some really fine people!
I must say I am starting to gain a glimmer of the vehemence
expressed in earlier contacts about defending the unique
[ glimmer of -- should be "glimmer of understanding about"]
character of Grex, and Arbornet also.

I fear only one. This should have been at the end of #64, but
got lost while "exploring the intraccies of unix".

I would like someone to tell me hwo to pernounce:
nawk
awk
grep
troff
crontab
cpio
chown
chmod
chgrp
chsh
chfn

I know unix pretty well (but i am no guru) and i havent' a clue as to
how to say any of these, btw, how do you say guru? =)
brenda
response 70 of 111: Mark Unseen   Jun 21 06:18 UTC 1995

hmm. I'm not a unix wiz, but i'll take a shot at the pronunciations.
nawk = nawk
awk = awk
grep = grep (rymes with step)
troff = tee are off
crontab = cron (like drone but not as long on the o) tab
cpio = ? (maybe cee pee eye oh)
chown = cee aitch own
chmod = cee aitch mod
chgrp = ?
chsh = cee aitch ess aitch
chfn = cee aitch eff en

guru = gooroo  ;)

btw- why would you need to pronounce them? I just spell it out if
I'm trying to tell someone the command verbally.
robh
response 71 of 111: Mark Unseen   Jun 21 11:05 UTC 1995

Except for pronouncing troff "troff", my pronunciations are the
same as brenda's. Why you're worried about pronouncing computer
command, I don't know. Computers usually don't have a problem
understanding your accent, as long as you're a good speller. >8)

(Oh, and I pronounce chgrp "see aitch group" or "change group".)
davel
response 72 of 111: Mark Unseen   Jun 21 11:39 UTC 1995

I mostly say them like Rob, though I pronounce chown & chmod as they're
spelled (chown rhymes with moan) & chgrp as chgroup. The *real*
religious war is whether you pronounce vi as "vee eye" or "vie".

I do have occasion to say these to coworkers who should have some degree
of familiarity with Unix commands; but when talking to an end user I
*definitely* spell anything that's not a common English word. ("Now type
ell pee, and a blank, and then a hyphen dee, ..." - but "Now type
cancel laser-12345".)

Oh, & I pronounce /etc as "et-see", which I've discovered is very
nonstandard but which is a *lot* faster than "slash ee tee cee".
