Right. Now is the time to start giving thought and preparation for
making a switch before the overload hits the fan. So far, the sendmail
switch seems to be a qualified success (thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou).

Yeah, I think so too. BTW, there is an item in agora (and soon to
be linked here) talking about sendmail, so if people see weirdness with
mail, be sure to enter a response for it!

If the new ROM chip and PC Route box don't improve reliability
soon, then I tthink something has to be done about the hardware situation.
The way Grex is running now is very frustrating to me, and I won't
renew my membership unless the situation improves. I know this is a
volunteer organization, but 70% down time is unreasonable when Grex is
my main source of e-mail and internet access.

From some scattered comments I've seen on the confs I'm not the only pern
who feels this way.

Agreed. There have been some interesting developments going on
lately; a lot of bugs have been active in the last 24 hours. I
put something in one conference, but right now I'm too tired to
remember where. sigh.
Note: we're off the net right now becuase of a routing problem.

You mean 1:39 am Wednesday, yes? (Details, details, from someone
who used to work midnights...)

raven, I'm damned frustrated about this too, but what do you think
we can do differently? It's all well and good to cop an attitude
of "Well, if *I* were in charge of Grex, this" and "If *I* were
in charge of Grex, that" and "If *I* were in charge of Grex, the
other thing". Remember, though, in a sense we are ALL in charge
of Grex. If you can think of something to reduce our down-time,
please let us know! I'm desperate, I'll try anything at this
point...

Sorry Rob, but I think it's a legitimate concern, we shouldn't blow it
off, and voodoo rituals won't cut it. Although I believe that staff is
making a sincere and valiant effort to resolve the problems, that
doesn't mean it's reasonable to expect users to have infinite patience
or allow an indefinite amount of time for solutions to be found.

I'm hoping that we'll be back on the net soon. I spoke to Ivars
earlier today, and he is adjusting things now.

I say, users can do what they want - stick it out or leave - and I
won't criticize (either way!). But I would express the thought to
raven, that I hope he'll stick around, or come back when the sun
shines again. We all have our own imperatives. I have other e-mail
resources, but many don't.

Well the net is back that's a good first step. Did those ROM chips
ever get installed? Did they work, and will usenet be back soon?
I guess I will renew my membership but with the caveat that
reliability must improve soon or I think something drastic should be done
like buying new hardware.
We are losing people because of downtime. Two of the most interesting
people who contribute to the cyber conf I FW seem to have left.

You are right about losing folks. We're on 64M of ram as of today.

We are? Oh my.

The boot ROMS were installed but they didn't work with the console
properly. We'll investigate when we can. It may be as simple as a baud rate
change on the console. We need to move Grex so that we can work on it more
easily. We're working on that, too, and may be able to use some
volunteers for drywall hangung and painting, some time soon.
Usenet is very problematical at the moment. I can't honestly say we
should expect it back soon.

I can only hope that the users we lost will return when they see that the
problems are fixed. They will be fixed.

Look, if you want help pounding nails, ask.
raven
response 63 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 05:52 UTC 1994

Pounding nails that Ithink I can handle :-) As for obscure Unix
comannds :-(.

response 64 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 07:27 UTC 1994

surely there's a Unix command for pounding nails. Can't someone just
write a script to get the dungeon in working order?

response 65 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 08:17 UTC 1994

We need to get the electrical box installed. This keeps getting put off,
because STeve has been fighting Grexian fires. I believe this work
should get done this weekend. Then we will need to do the drywall,
and I think there will be a call for volunteers for that.
We are pretty close to being ready to move.
davel
response 66 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 10:44 UTC 1994

STeve's too busy to write the nail-pounding script, & no one else has the
necessary expertise right now.

We'll also need volunteers to do painting some time after the
drywall hanging.

response 68 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 19:51 UTC 1994

Excuse me? There are plenty (well, one at least) electrician-type
who has continually poppped up for these sorts of jobs - delegation
of tasks is a pretty sight when the chips are down.

Wiring, I can't do. Painting, I can. Count me in.

response 70 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 20:43 UTC 1994

Even with a script, wouldn't we need some sort of hardware to pound the
nails? Something like a room printer?

response 71 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 2 23:23 UTC 1994

If you want volunteers, ask, and then tell us where to go and when.
popcorn
response 72 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 3 03:52 UTC 1994

Yeah, I think we're currently at a point where we don't need volunteers.
Once the wiring is done and we're ready to drywall, we definitely will
need volunteers. Ditto for painting. Dunno yet when drywalling and
painting are going to happen. Once we've got a date it'll be easier to
ask for volunteers.
tsty
response 73 of 127: Mark Unseen   Dec 5 10:47 UTC 1994

If the wiring is not yet finished, there seems to be a
need for volunteers who would spend a short afternoon
finishing the wiring.

If you want any help with setting up the dungeon, I volunteer to drive
up there from St. Louis to help any time before January 16. It would
also be an excellent opportunity for me to meet some of you wonderful
people.

Please leave a response here or email me. I *am* interested.
