I wasn't remarking about this as a matter of "bad form", but rather from
the standpoint of keeping people informed. I was going to ask in #74
whether the item was intended as input for the Newletter, or just for the
convenience of transmitting news "on line". And (Re #45) I didn't ask
about this in the Newsletter item, as I thought it was a more general
issue, since Item 74 may not have been intended to have any relation to
the Newsletter.

Announcements in agora appears at first thought to be the place to post
Grex news, but it is used for a lot more than that, starting with personal
inquiries to classifieds (which aren't supposed to be there anyway). I
think a Grex News Conference would be a good idea, so I suggest you
suggest it in an Item here, andyv. I think I prefer the
one-news-item-per-Item format, as it would be easier to keep the cf clean,
by retiring old News. This could be a news gathering place for the
Newsletter, too. I see no problem with the redundancy, as only a small
fraction of members read coop (I'll bet), and the intent of the
Newsletters is to convey information to members that aren't following
everything as closely as a few do. The Editor could also choose to either
edit the news item for the Newsletter, or ask the author to write
something more specifically for the Newsletter, etc: it would be a News
"scratchpad".

plus maybe a linking of Agora's announcement item.

soundss like a good idea to me! andyv, if you're worried about
FW-ing being a big overwhelming task, don't be. I'm willing
to help out!

That really sounds like a great idea! I like the one item per Item format,
too.

It would also be a good idea if the FW of the history conf patrolled it
and saved all real news. (Is that the history conf or archive conf, or
what? I seem to have checked my mind at the door....)

(Actually, there's a history *and* an archive conference.)

What is the exact difference between the two, if I may ask?

I believe the history conference is for talking about the history of
the world, the country, and of Grex, while the archive conference is
a place for linking neat items from other conferences.

In history, history is discussed - pretty much history of anything. In
archive, history - of Grex only - is preserved. Basically no similarity
at all. If I recall, there is at least one item in history discussing
Grex's origins - but it's *discussion*, not archived items from
the ghosts of Grex conferences past.

Sometimes I do a mental doubletake at the suggestion that Grex even
*has* a history. It does, of course. But sometimes it seems like
only yesterday that a bunch of folks got together to talk about
organizing it.

Grex's history extends back beyond its creation, too. :)

Indeed. Back to June 1983, in one sense, and April 1975 in another
(June '83 for M-Net's birth, April '75 for Confer's).

Is that history of Grex recorded anywhere? I would like to post a copy
in Grexnews.

In one sense, about half of all the history of both M-Net and Grex
is recorded--the conferecnes that lived on them.
The other half are the other non-ASCII dealings; M-Net probably has
much better records than we do for that type of thing.
We have very little on founders things I think. Marcus John and I
have notes, but we haven't gotten anything together formally. ...I can
see it now: the Ann Arbor Grex Library. ;-)

Someone said there's an item or two in the History conference that have
a summary of info about the founding of Grex. This might be what you're
looking for, Andy.

Re #62: I have minutes of a few founders meetings and copies of email
that was sent around during the organizational effort.

Would anyone be interested in setting up a Civil War conference on the Grex?

pages.

Thanks Marcus and Valerie. Marcus, do you think it would be ok to
post those history notes as a story for grexnews cf? I'm going to read
them after this. Nephi seemed impressed and others would be too :-)
