#48> That's an excellent point, Mary. I've made similar comments about
athletics, but at least with athletics it *could* be said that men and women
don't compete at the same levels.

i think the problem is that generally black actors get roles meant for only
a black actor, just as female roles are normally written for .. a female.
i would like to see more roles about human experiences that aren't race
related given to black actors. if that's possible ..

#52> Passenger 57 was originally written for a white actor. But yes, it's the
exception, not the rule.

They don't compete at the same levels, brighn. Not in most sports, anyway;
as far as I can tell, all major team sports currently being competed in
involve at least some skills in which men have major biological advantages
over women. Most obvious among those is speed, a critical factor in almost
every sport.

re 53: oof. Let's see...Helen Mirren, Ryan Philippe, Maggie Smith, Kristin
Scott Thomas...I want to say Tim Curry as well but I might be making that
up. Several of the main characters I didn't necessarily recognize, but they
were good actors nonethless. Go see it. :)

The idea of separate men's leagues/events and women's leagues/events in
sports seems logical, and very fair to women athletes. If men and
women competed directly against each other in all sports, where would
the WNBA be, or the WUSA? If tryouts were open to both men and women,
you'd have to have A leagues, B leagues, and probably C through GGG
leagues, before enough women made the cut to afford places for all the
women currently competing in women's pro leagues. It just makes sense
to have separate leagues for women. There should also be a way to
accomodate female outliers at the strong end of the curve who want to
play in the men's baseball leagues, for example. (There are tedious PC
types who would then complain that there should then be a place for
male outliers at the weak end of the curve who want to play in the
WNBA, but I think we can ignore them. Let the women's leagues remain
women's leagues, and let qualified women join the men's leagues if they
want to.)
Oscars are a whole different thing. Separate awards for men and women
lets them hand out twice as many statues, is all. (As to separate
awards for African Americans, the African Americans themselves take
care of that. I forget the name.)

Not nonsense, Jamie, and calling it that won't make it so. Your idea
that you'd be burned at the stake for holding a whites-only awards
ceremony is what's nonsense. You wouldn't be burned at the stake,
you'd be laughed off the stage. (Same as on Grex, come to think of it.)

reactions to racism.

Doesn't being a white male make up for the insult??
Chris Rock in one of his comedy specials says, "There are white
*busboys* here who wouldn't trade places with me. And I'm rich! The
busboy is saying, 'Aw, I dunno, I think I'll just ride this white thing
out and see where it takes me.'""

They say amphetamine psychosis and toxic psychosis is difficult to
diagnose from true schizophrenia.
It's really hard to say what the relative opportunities are of blacks
and whites in today's society. So much of that depends on your own
expectations, at least as much as the expectations of others, and virtually
all of it requires objective judgement on facts that individuals just don't
have. How many of us know the real, honest reasons why we weren't accepted
for a given job after an interview?
The thing that bugs me is that a lot of legislation and political
thought is based on the idea that self-empowement - which essentially amounts
to "reverse" racism - helps to reduce a racist condition in society. There
isn't a single example in recorded history of this happening, though, in all
of the examples of disenfranchised groups which have attained power or
some semblance of equality.

yes and it also makes those less secure white folks think "dammit i'm sick
of getting told i'm a piece of shit jus cuz i'm white" kinda thoughts and the
next thing you know they're flying the confederate flag and raising little
skinhead shitheads.
