There aren't really any new plots at all... the artistry is in the variation.

Re 49. Not to mention sequels and prequels, more prevalent all the time.
(Somebody commented that movie marquees are starting to look like baseball
scores: BLAIRWITCH 3/STARWARS 5.) It's the principle of brand extension.

The sequels this year stand a chance of passing the billion dollar mark,
aggregately, what with Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and The
Matrix all having episode deux, and The Scorpion King.

(Men In Black 2, Star Trek 10, James Bond 20....)

A chance? I'd say sure thing. From the first four listed, I think you get
at *least* one into the 300 mil mark, possibly more, and the rest clearing
2. If the Matrix sequel bites hard, it might only do 150, but it's still
enough.

Scorpion King drew 32 million Rock fans on opening night, so we're on our way.

I forgoet about MIB2.
SW Ep2 should hit 300M easy, and may pass 400M.
HP 2 should hit 200M, but I'm skeptical of that.
LotR 2 should hit 200M easily. I sense that it will do better than HP2.
The Matrix was a fad, IMHO. I'm guess The Matrix 2 will be lucky to do 150,
but I might be wrong. After all, I never got the appeal of the first one.
Yeah, throw in MIB2, and the episode twos alone should hit one trillion (300
+ 200 + 200 + 150 + 150).

So, will Attack of the Clones kill everyone else at the box office, or does
anyone want to put some money on one of the other episode twos to kill the
giant? Allegedly, even The Matrix chickened out on a May release.

"billion" (or 1000 million, if you're British)

I think "Attack of the Clones" will be another blockbuster movie.
It'll be the 5th Star Wars movies; two were great movies and the others
were big hits as well. Who is going to miss the latest in that
series? Anyway, this one looks like another good one to me.

I don't know if it'll blow out the competition. There's plenty of room
for two big-hit movies. "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings" and "A
Beautiful Mind" all came out intermingled with one another, and they
were all big, big successes.

Attack of the Clones will open big, but probably taper off fast if it
ends up sucking.

I'm betting my popcorn money on "Spiderman," which isn't a movie sequel
but which is a Well Established Derivative Property. It's Sam Raimi's time.

How's it rated? Can I take my 5 year old?
krj
response 62 of 150: Mark Unseen   Apr 23 22:12 UTC 2002

Rated PG-13 for "Stylized Violence and Action" according to the website.
There's a lot of stuff blowing up in the movie's TV ads. My instinct
says this movie's not for five-year-olds.

I can't believe it's almost movie season already. Gives me something to look
forward to, though.

Attack of the Clones will make 2 mil just for the theme music at the beginning
of the movie. It can make 2 or three more by being good, and we'll see about
it. I've been saying for years that this is the critical movie of the
prequels, since a quality second movie will really load the hype for part III
and make or break the quality level of the entire prequel trilogy. And,
really, the durability of the entire franchise.

Don't forget, in the sequel category ... the next Bond movie is due out
at Christmastime, just in time to make the cutoff of "2002 sequel
releases"

Re #57: Who'll miss Attack of the Clones? ME! After Ewok and
then Jar-Jar Binks, I am THROUGH with George Lucas.

Sooner or later it'll wind up as a DVD in a remainder bin. Maybe
then, if he avoids making another "attack of the cutesies" movie.

Alright history moment but when I saw the trailer for Star Wars II and Senator
Palpetine calling for the creation of an "Army of the Republic" all I could
think was McClealan. Now I will not be able to avoid thinking of the US civil
war for the entire duration of that film.
Beware the history geeks.

SW Ep III has to contain the moment of celluloid 28 years in the making...
in goes Anakin, out comes Darth. If it doesn't, Lucas is an utter moron. =}

Spiderman has to get me through buzz, because the ads make it look as hoaky
as Superman: The Movie. Batman raised the bar, and the teasers don't look like
Spiderman has met that challenge.

Although the references to both Batman ("Who are you?" "I'm Spiderman.") and
Superman ("You're not Superman, you know.") give it promise for camp value.

I suppose I just wanted to confirm that I was reading things correctly
and someone was speaking favorably about the Batman movie.. No doubt
my incredulity temporarily interfered with my ability to form a more
  complete sentence..
