1) R.E.M.--"R.E.M. for the World Traveller" (Okay, I'm cheating--this is a
mix tape of my favorite REM tunes which I made and would hate to be with-
out. If I had to pick an REM album, it'd probably be "reckoning")
2) Beethoven's Ninth Symphony
3) King Crimson--"three of a perfect pair"
4) sonic youth--"sister"
5) "A Treasury of Gregorian Chants"

I've been wanting to get one of the new Gregorian Chant cds currently out,
like "chant" for instance. Any suggestions of the best of the lot?

There was an article in the Freep, earlier this week, where John Guinn
reviewed about five Gregorian Chant CDs. The one he liked the best,
raved about actually, was the one with the the sculptured male angel
picture on the cover. Sorry, I don't remember the group, but I have
seen the CD on shelves, prominently displayed as a best seller.

1. Vaughn Williams: Symphony #5
2. The Chieftans: Boil the Breakfast Early
3. Steeleye Span: Below the Salt
4. Black Sabbath: Master of Reality
5. Arvo Part: Arbos
Tough item. I'd also try to smuggle King Crimson's "Discipline" CD
onto the island, but if they caught me I would begrudgingly give it
up.

Arvo? What kind of music do (they?) play?

Arvo Part is an Estonian composer. He writes what you might call
"avant-garde" sacred music. His CDs are released on the ECM New Series
label, which does Meredith Monk, John Cage, and recordings by contemporary
ensembles of other composer's work. "Arbos" is a collection of Part's
smaller pieces, vocal and instrumental. I bought it *by accident*, on tape,
thinking that it was something I had heard the night before on that radio
show "Music from the Hearts of Space." After that I started buying as much
Arvo Part as I could get my hands on. His CDs are advertised in some music
magazines now, so I guess that he is becoming more popular.
