Isn't trade considered to be anything that involves passing money around, as
far as border people are concerned?

That's probably the normal definition; the "border person" definition of
is international trade is more like business-to-business transactions.
You can buy a dozen Tim Horton donuts without any hassle from Canadian
customs officials, especially if you offer them one.

Well, point taken about not looking for trouble, Rane.

re #49 --- how true, i;ve sat at customs for a few hours because "i let
the wrong word slip ..... " and that work-permit thing is really atrocious
even though we have the same thing coming into the states.

I asked at the bank on Friday, what they would suggest given that credit cards
won't work for our Indian customers. The only thing they could suggest was
having a bank over there wire our bank money. THat costs the wirer some money
and it costs us $10 to receive it. But it may be the only thing we can do.

It might be worth it.

ummmmmmmmmm, that would make a one-month membership, uhhhh, not very
cost effective.

To rephrase 55, it might make *yearly* membership payments
received this way worth it.

Yeah, I think yearly is the only kind of payment it would be reasonable to
receive this way. We'll have to ask the question, though, whether $60/year
is the amount a member should *pay*, or the amount we should *receive*?
Those two have always been the same before, so it hasn't been an issue.

Ideally, we should do it whichever way would net Grex the most
money. I realize that it could be hard to determine which way that
is.

I think it's reasonable to ask prospective members to bear the cost
of getting their donation to us. We already do that -- U.S. members
who mail a check have to pay postage.

Rather than an electronic _bank_ transfer, look into wiring money via Western
Union. there is still a service charge, for the sender, but I don't think
the recipient gets charged.

Western Union is an interesting suggestion. I am non-plussed at the recipient
bank charging the payee for an incoming wire transfer. Seems self-defeating.
Perhaps there is something about international transfers here I don't know.
A bank that is a member of the Federal Reserve system should be able to handle
this without a lot of problem or expense to you. Of course, I understand
the banks are thinking about putting coin-machines on the stalls in the
rest-room soon (False rumor - joke - I hope!) so I may be out of date.
We could send popcorn to India and have her courier the funds back, as
an alternative. Let's get gold, in that case!

Yeah, heck, we don't need a bank at all. I'll just install a vault and all
Grex members can pay in valuable items instead of in cash.

I think the phone company would just love it if we paid them in gold. 8^)

According to a Grexer I talked to a few days ago who used to work at a bank
in Ann Arbor, Indians can often send money to the US by going to Indian banks
and asking for a check drawn on an American bank.

Here's some new info on credit cards. I checked out a search engine to try
and find the e-mail address of an old friend. The world e-mail directory is
at http://worldemail.com/. On the top of their homepage is an ad saying
something like "now you can accept credit cards via the internet. not
restricted to united states. Visa, MC, (etc) accepted world-wide."

The clickable ad box had the address of <multicards@worldemail.com>. Might
want to look into this...maybe your foriegn friends are 'scamming you' into
thinking they can't use credit cards here (now, WHO would do a thing like
that? ;)
