I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to have an "international"
conference. I've encountered grexers from other countries who are
frustrated because its difficult to figure out who the other people
grexing from their country are. Such a conf would give them a place
to congregate and would also be a place to discuss with them ideas like
setting up international versions of grex, and issues such as overly
flirtatious behaviour on party.

A number of international users read Agora and nothing else, but I'm
betting that if there was a conf more relevant to them, a lot more would
read it and there would be stronger lines of communication between
board, staff and our international users.

I like the idea Richard, but tell me how we get them into the
conferences, first. Thats the real problem. I like the idea of
the international conference, but we'd swamp it with Americans.
The number of international users who read Agora is less than
10 isn't it? I haven't counted lately so maybe I'm off base here.
I'd like to be.

Won't the intro conference make that happen a lot more easily?

I don't see how, Steve. It's *getting* people into the conferences
at all, thats the problem. If you take oh, say the last 5000 accounts
taken out here and look at the shells used, you'll see a steady decline
in the use of /b. Now, obviously people can get into PicoSpan by other
means but it was my impression from a while ago, that those who got into
conferencing usually did it by picking it as the default shell.

It's the getting them to try it, and getting them documentation
that is the hard part. Valerie's screenfull of commands has certainly
helped some, but we still need more, I think. Problem is, I'm not sure
that the right things are to do. If the intro conference can make this
happen, great!

I was under the impression that a lot of people start reading agora, but hit
a wall in the first item, and decide conferencing is not worth their time,
becaused it is obviously all fluff. I don't think we have any hard evidence
of this, but it is very believable, and the info conference was created (I
thought) to turn that situation around., I think it will.

Is the intro now the default for newbies or has that change been made yet?

I'd think that an "international" conf could be plugged for a while in the
motd, where international users are bound to see it even if they dont conf..
maybe even in the party motd.

Of course. Saves postage. Good idea. Thanks, richard. How cool.

Re 57 - It hasn't been made official yet, but I'm sure the
matter will be discussed at Wednesday's Board meeting.

Re #56. I had Marla all psyched to start conferencing. I got her to start
at the begining of the current agora, but she gave up after about 2 days since
there was so much stuff. She hit the wall.

There's just no way to start any conference of a decent size by reading all
the items. Just not realistic. Use "fix", or just skip ahead. People catch
on anyway.

Intro didn't exist then. She started the day spring agora started. When she
started she was just as caught up as everyone else was, but was swamped in
a day. I said, forget, forget. Maybe she misunderstood. ;)
