#36> One of Wired's conditions was the movie's ability to enthrall. Star Wars
has arguably enthralled more people than any other movie, ever, being #2 on
the all-time moneymaker list, #2 on the all-time "adjusted for current
dollars" moneymaker list, and spawning several generations of addicts. Only
Star Trek fans are comparably fanatical, and Star Trek didn't manage the same
degree of mainstream penetration. "The Quiet Earth" certainly can't make any
similar "enthrall" claims.

THX1138 is certainly better science, and better written, and more artistic
than Star Wars; as a standalone movie, I think it's much better. As a cultural
phenomenon, though, there's no comparison between the two movies. (THX1138
also manages to find its way into all of Lucas' films: There's a license plate
in American Grafitti [Ford's, IIRC] that's THX138, Leia is in cell block 1138
[or something like that], one of the battle droids in The Phantom Menace has
1138 onhis back, and so on.)

Anyone mention Lathe of Heaven yet? That and Brave New World were favorites
of mine, although I haven't been able to find Brave New World on tape or DVD
(granted, I haven't really looked... maybe I shall).

Lathe of Heaven was a bit slow and talky for that sort of "best of" list.
But it came out on tape and DVD a couple years ago. Guess what my first DVD
was? :)

Agreed about Lathe.
My first DVD was actually Air Force One, for a very pragmatic reason (I bought
a DVD player for Val's birthday, and so I just bought the cheapest DVD at
CostCo that we'd likely watch more than once, to test the machine).
Which reminds me... my first CD (that goes back a few years) was Faith No
More's "Angel Dust," bought for the same reason.

THX11338 didn't really enthrall me so much as just sedate me.

Yeah, me too. It seemed like a student film lengthened beyond the point
where the plot could hold my interest.

That's basically what it was, but to dystopia film fans, it's a good entry.
