Hmm...maybe I'll liik in to a saddle tether. I really like the convenience
of the quick-release, and I'm not entirely sure that I'd even be able to
convert it to a regular bolt (it's a Trek 4500).
I'd hate to not use it for commuting around Chicago, considering the on-road
nature of the bike. Thank you for the offer, though :)

If you bring the quick-release bolt into the hardware store they can get you
the same size nut for the same bolt, or a stainless nut and bolt combination
in the same size. It will require a tool to remove after that.
Today we saw an abandoned bike with a quick-release seat post still in the
bike and the saddle gone. The aluminum seatpost apparently got corroded fast
to the steel tube.
There is a biking item (210).

<shudder> That would be a little to invasive for my taste, riding
without the seat . . .

I'd like to announce that France has been eliminated from teh World Cup
without scoring any goals, and both Ireland and Germany have gone through.
Go on you boys in green, go on you boys in green, go on you boys, go on you
boys in green . . .

France's performance in this World Cup has been called the worst by any
defending World Cup holder in the history of the tournament.

From the latest RISKS digest:
- Rick Boucher files suit to defend the right to skip commercials
- The FAA's STAR air-traffic control system is being shoved into
service without testing and using questionable justification.
- NYC's card-operated subway fare system is not anonymous, and
questions exist about how or even whether personal info is
protected or not.
- The latest version of Excel allows a hacker to hijack the
user's computer if XML style sheets are enabled. (Typical.)
The whole shebang is in /a/r/u/russ/public/risks-22.12

I get it. #485 came from an announcement the ARRL sent to members. I
posted it here for general interest. Why, did someone post this here
and I missed it?

No . . . I was just curious. I occasionally come accross the mag where
I work, and thought of it when you made your announcement.

QST is published by the ARRL, which is the national organization of "hams",
and who sponsors Field Day.

Several, although I operate so far only on 2 meters and 70 cm. I need
a big antenna for the lower bands. If you come out to the field day
exercise, after noon on Saturday 22 June, at the "hill" on Domino
Farms (above the Lake, which has a small cabin next to it, back near the
barn), you can watch hams make baloney...er, chat on the radio.

I *think* I see aurora borealis tonight. It could just be clouds, but
there's a long line of lighter colored sky right under polaris, at maybe 30
degrees elevation. Anyone else see it? If it is clouds, they are the
only ones in the sky and they're moving very slowly.

IWLTA that my daughter's car, a 1986 Subaru GL wagon (manual, 4WD) has
just rusted beyond repair (it was being lifted to replace an exhaust pipe
and the lifting pads began to crush, so the shop refused to proceed). She
would like to find a used manual wagon in good shape with service record
(no SUVs should apply). Any make will be considered. I would appreciate it
if you know of one, or spy one, that is available, you would let me know.

Stunning videos of Arab atrocities and violence training will be featured
*tonight* on MSNBC's "Alan Keyes is Making Sense." The entire first half-hour
of Keyes' groundbreaking show, which begins at 10 P.M. Detroit time, will
feature clips from "Israel and the War of Images" and "The Trojan Horse."
These explosive tapes, made by French film maker Pierre Rehov, contain
actual footage from Palestinian Authority television documenting Yasser
Arafat's call for destruction of the Jewish people and annihilation of Israel.
They also document the brainwashing of Arab children with attitudes of
hatred and violence toward the Jewish people. Unique to these films is that
they state no outside opinion, but merely show what is aired on Palestinian
TV with translations in both French and English.

(after plunking down $110 on a graphing calculator [despite the syllabus'
claim of not needing one] and a brief crash course in the basics, I think
I'm ready for my first statistics test in... wow, about five hours.)
